City Council can’t decide on plan for new districts

Political impact weighed against addressing population changes

The Boston City Council may be the one of the world’s most collegial elected bodies, often passing measures with near-unanimous votes. But now, the council finds itself deadlocked over an issue that strikes close to home: redrawing Boston’s nine City Council districts to account for population shifts over the last decade. Two leading proposals have emerged with subtle differences that come down to a handful of precincts. Neither plan represents radical change, but the map ultimately adopted will determine how councilors are elected for the next decade.
