Chelsea Street Bridge opens

State officials celebrated the opening of the $125 million Chelsea Street Bridge between East Boston and Chelsea on Monday, formally unveiling a 450-foot-long truss-type drawbridge that can provide 175 feet of vertical clearance when raised. Officials hailed the new bridge as an improvement not just for the motorists crossing above but for the tankers passing beneath, with the wider space between bridge piers allowing for newer, more environmentally sound double-hull tankers to use the channel.
