Repairs to the aging Sagamore Bridge throughout the spring have slowed traffic leaving Cape Cod to a crawl most nights and backed it up for miles on Sundays, culminating in a Mother’s Day morass when the stalled line of cars stretched past multiple exits on Route 6 and triggered all-day gridlock on nearby 6A. Officials said the work, to repair and replace many steel elements, is necessary to extend the life of the nearly 80-year-old Sagamore and will wind down before May 24.

Well, Army Corps of Engineers, what are you going to do for the next two weeks? Nothing? What about a police officer to manage the lanes as they merge? What about police officers directing the flow of traffic over the bridge? Last weekend there was no wait on the eastbound side, while traffic sat for hours on the westbound side. How about a pair of police officers allowing the westbound lane to flow? This back-up is just nonsense and lack of planning and effort. There is no reason that this situation cannot be improved except lack of effort. Our tax dollars at work?
with the mildest winter on record, why did they wait until March to begin work? Also, why did they not do this work when they closed the bridge just a couple of years ago for resurfacing?
Last Sunday it took me over 2 1/2 hours to get from Yarmouthport to Hingham. The major stall was the bridge. Why they blocked a complete lane with those cones was a mystery. There was nothing going on and no reason why we had to stay in almost single file the whole way. Going up on Saturday afternoon was equally frustrating. It started just before the bridge and again lanes were blocked off unnecessarily and there were no workers just empty equipment on the bridge and of course, police. Whatever is being done is killing the Cape - or is that their plan?
This is just another example of the general public taking infrastructure for grated. Bridges must be maintained. Unless you have less cars traveling over the bridge, you'll get backups, no matter how many detail officers you have out there. Think about how bad the backups would be on a typical summer Sunday. Complain all you want, but this is work that has to be done when temperatures are above freezing, otherwise the work is compromised. Would you prefer that the bridge not be maintained and gradually fall apart?
Why not a replacement bridge for this century. This bridge could be one of two bridges of similar style or be replaced with a larger modern bridge could be built. It could be allow for pedestrian and bicycle traffic and become a tourist attraction like Golden Gate and similar spans. Business at either end would enjoy more traffic. And let's face it, when the work is complete, Sagamore as it exists is not adequate for the traffic of today and tomorrow. Let's put people to work on something that we want.
