MIT taps provost Reif as university president

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology named its provost, L. Rafael Reif, as its 17th president this morning, taking over from Susan Hockfield, who announced three months ago that she would step down. Hockfield appointed Reif provost in 2005. A native of Venezuela, he has been at MIT since 1980, and before serving as provost was head of the department of electrical engineering and computer science.
