Warren: ‘I won’t deny who I am’

She has given clumsy answers, evaded questions, and for five weeks running allowed the story of her undocumented Native American ancestry to consume the entire Senate campaign in Massachusetts.

Thursday afternoon, my phone rang with Democratic candidate Elizabeth Warren on the other end of the line, ready to talk. Finally.

Comments

mcgrory and his famous words"our usually sage mayor." after our blithering nitwit bagman mayor was quoted as saying "enough about this native american and credibility problem as we got more important issues to worry about." like those pearls of sagacity spoken from a dimwit with absolutely no credibility of his own except to people like mcgrory and a few of his fellow scribes. however, i don't wannna give all the credit to americas most beloved mayor as when it comes to the word credibility or lack thereof he's got plenty of help and company at both city hall and the state house. ma

Warren is one deceitful and dishonest individual out for only her own gain and not good the people of Massachusetts. she said, "I won't deny who I am, I won't deny my heritage." BUT She has given clumsy answers, evaded questions, and for five weeks running allowed the story of her undocumented Native American ancestry to consume the entire Senate campaign in Massachusetts. Does this sound like someone who is proud of her heritage or just hiding from evidence of low moral character?

In all her years of being an Indian, what has she done to help the indians? She used them until she got what she needed and dumped them like a hot coal. She's a phoney.

Please, someone ask this woman ... aren't you an adult, and a lawyer? Did your parents ever tell you about Santa Claus and the Easter bunny? Are you still holding tight to those as well?

I dunno. I just can't imagine my mother telling about some neat aspect of my heritage (or telling me anything for that matter) that I would ever think of questioning or "investigating". (Mmmm, I wonder if my mother is trying to deceive me for some reason...I must spend much money to check the veracity of her statements). In fact if my mother WAS lying to me about something, i would just have to assume she believed it was best for me. If I was Warren, I'd cling hard to that ancestry, and rather than trying to prove myself right, I would challenge anyone to prove me wrong with 100% certainty. I don't care what her heritage is, I'm voting for her for all of the meaningful reasons. But, I have to admit, the piece The Herald ran on Pow Wow Chow, the pictures and the text, was pretty darn funny. And that's the ticket I think, as long as she never benefited by being a "minority", then she should just cling to what her mother told her, be proud of it, and laugh along with The Herald.

gr8te - but should 'clinging to what her mother told her' include being an adult lawyer who helps colleges file false federal diversity reports? If liberals take diversity and affirmative action as a serious need to help those who have suffered from racism, why no outrage over her and Harvard mis-reporting?

Well, there's no other alternative, the Globe MUST ask every candidate for anything about their heritage...AND they MUST ask for proof that Candidate X's great-Grandad was indeed from Norway. We cannot move forward until we have identified everone - with definitive proof - in the background of Senator Sidelines, Mitt Romney, Mitch McConnel, Rush Limbaugh. Marco Rubio gets away with saying his parents basically fought Castro when they left before he was ever in power, but Warren and Obama are being asked for paper proof of who they are and millions of ordinary Americans are being purged from voter rolls in the Red States! Hello Jim Crow!

Order up a DNA test. It will answer a lot of questions.

Elizabeth Warren's Cherokee name...Spitting Bull.

Much ado about nothing

Missing was her much needed mea culpa. She should have admitted that as a liberal, she is drawn to seeking whatever victim status is available to her. She could have come clean on this, admitted it was a self serving act, and put this to rest. But she unapologetically continues to cling to this family heritage that may or may not be true. An admission of her actions would have ended this, but the lack of any admission guarantees that it will stay alive until November.

Elizabeth, I believe not a single voter in Massachusetts would care if you were/were not of Native American heritage. I also believe they all care if you are dishonest. That's the only part of this that is clear. Silly, silly, sad.

Kind of a Hatfield and McCoy story....Please ask her if her children used the Native American claim on their college applications.

She declined to call the universities to ask them to release the documented hiring records. The axe falls, Off goes the head. This wonderful woman has made herself a victim and a clown. so far, she has declined to wear native American garb and braid her hair to dance around the campfire. Bottom line, she has made herself a caricature with bulging cheekbones, a feather stuck in her hair and a background of a teepee. Native Americans deserve special affirmative action status. Is is a debt we all owe to assuage a wrong. Stealing from that special treatment account is theft and professor Warren is a fraud and a thief albeit a smart one. It is staggering to witness this political comedy. Democrats deserve better.

Very similar to your post in the Herald.

She does not claim to be Indian. Indians come from India. She claims to be 1/32 Native American.

She has bumbled and stumbled with this as small as it may be. The issue itself has become trite but remains as the Albatross around her neck. "He went like one that hath been stunned, And is of sense forlorn A sadder and a wiser man He rose the morrow morn." -S.T. Coleridge

How can you tell Betsy Warren is lying? She's speaking with the press.

Brian McGrory has now has had his 15 minutes(maybe 30 minutes) of fame. The so called list provided by Harvard to the Globe does not even mention her name. Does the newspaper accept without evidence that the lone NA professor designated is Elizabeth Warren without journalistic proof? It is indicative of sloppy reporting. Perusing that list it also showed that of a total of 87 faculty only 13 were female. There was obviously a significant deficiency in faculty selection at that time. Maybe the story starts there. If there is a problem this is where the investigation should go. If this reporter wants to fulfill his job description Mr. McGrory needs to close these holes. This incident did not happen in a vacuum. Others were responsible for using the information Prof Warren honestly gave them. There is no issue with her integrity but other players should be scrutinized including those who fed this bit of her biography to the Herald. How about asking Mr. Fernstrom if he had any role directly or indirectly in planting this story? There is no doubt that Prof Warren's hiring for all positions she held were because of merit and that this fact annoys the hell out of her opponents. If elected she will make a terrific representative of this state and the nation.

It continues to astound me that Warren gets grilled on this presumed ethical issue while the press continues to give Scott Brown a free pass on his: not coming forward with the name of the man who abused him as a child. Double standard, anyone? That being said, Warren has really flubbed this response.

Are you daft? The two are not even remotely similar. Not only was Brown proactive in getting a humiliating story out there, his claim was corroborated by others who had no agenda. Similarly the camp acknowledged some levels of abuse. Warren on the other hand made an assertion that she was of minority decent in an apparent effort to curry favor. Do you really think Scott Brown claimed someone abused him to gain a certain tactical advantage? If you do, that's disgusting. I couldn't care less what her (or his) heritage is. I was somewhat interested to see what kind of candidate she might turn out to be but the way she's handled this one issue has been a disaster for her. The Governor's public comments yesterday only served to back up the fact that she isn't up to the task of representing the Commonwealth.

This is an excellent, well articulated post! Being neither Democrat nor Republican I do tend to vote for moderate Repubs but have gone the other way too. It's not the issue which has hurt her. It's the way she's completely evaded direct, repeated questions. That's unfortunate.

I'm scrolling down the list looking for posts to like, dislike, or comment on. I see the words "Screaming Gerbil". 3 minutes later my stomach still hurts from laughing so hard. I love it! Flawless name!
