Just a few fair questions for the head of Roxbury Community College

My phone was silent yesterday, as it has been for weeks. This wasn’t surprising, since the person I was waiting to hear from was Terence Gomes, president of Roxbury Community College.

The longtime leader has been pretty much silent at a time of what can fairly be called crisis for his school. RCC is under both federal and state investigation for financial-aid issues and underreported campus crime. There was widespread outrage, as well, over a jobtraining program, funded by a group of major CEOs, that Gomes rejected, even though it would have provided a prime opportunity for his students at no cost to the school.

great series adrian. however the statement " BOSTON NEEDS TO HEAR FROM THE MAN IN CHARGE" is part of my problem with this paper as the people who write for and have the most influence when it comes to the status woe, instead print the gospel according to various and sundry mouthpieces . when was the last time the blithering nitwit bagman mayor or the equally insipid and incompetent governor had to face the music for either their actions or inactions? or the 1st time. as far as gomes, wheres the outrage from city hall or the state house? wheres the outrage from the people and parents from the neighborhoods? wheres the outrage from the 10 point whatever on this subject? but hey, at least the dudley area across from bpd headquarters is due for a refurbishing which is obviously more important than something as trivial as education. right? ma

Who is on the board? What are they saying? The governor?

so, who hires and would fire this arrogant bureaucrat?? lemme see: his salary and benefits are publicly paid, and he HAS to be accountable to someone, right? what, a golden parachute, long-term contract justified by bogus comparisons to the private sector and "academic freedom" ?? well, he is simply a bureaucrat. one who should be accountable instead of some gang boss. we have too many of this type of impudent manager and they are ruining institutions that took decades to build. PLEASE follow up on who does he answer to. Everyone has someone. Him, too. If nothing else works, some legislative committee ought to subpoena this character and interrogate him about these matters

You cannot expect Blacks to run any entity correctly. Corruption is in the collective mindset of those who choose to (often sub-consciously) remain in post-slavery victim mode against "Whitey" or "the system." The harm done is to their own people, who perpetuate a cycle of seemingly never-ending corruption, violence, and inner self-loathing.

Good for you, Adrian. Hope you get some answers to your questions. If not, hope you move on to the next level (e.g. Mayor, Governor) to ask some of the same questions posed here in the Comments section. Keep at 'em!

Adrian, maybe you could benefit from a refresher course at RCC. To wit: "Still, there's a lot that people want to know." I'll forgive the absence of "who" between people and want, but I can't forgive "There's a lot of people." It should be, of course, "There ARE a lot of people."

Gomes's behavior is beyond stonewalling--it's outrageous. This is a public college, not some private fiefdom. Who does Gomes report to in the higher-education system? He or she should respond to the Gomes matter. Students, parents, faculty ought to press for answers--and leadership change. Gomes should have been shown the door a long time ago.
