Elizabeth Warren gets a breather

SPRINGFIELD — Marisa DeFranco gave it her best shot during her moment in the spotlight, but by the time she took the convention stage Saturday afternoon, she and everyone else in the Mass Mutual Center knew that she was enjoying the high point of her quixotic run for the US Senate.

DeFranco, the immigration lawyer from Salem who was challenging Elizabeth Warren in the Senate race, had run headlong into an immovable object: the state’s Democratic machine.

Adrian Walker must not be familiar with the process of choosing delegates. Delegates to the state convention are chosen at Town and Precinct Caucuses and their choice for a candidate is known at that time. Candidates for Senate visited each of these committees prior to the caucus and had their chance to make their case. There was absolutely no undue or even any coercion to influence one's vote. Certainly arguments were made but each delegate chosen made up their own mind. During that time I had visited close to a dozen Town or Precinct Committees and it was clear Elizabeth Warren was their choice. Even within Marissa DeFranco's own Senate District she only garnered 18% of the vote at the Convention. Elizabeth Warren made her way to almost every Committee, Marissa DeFranco did not, even early on. It was the hard political work that produced the result last Saturday and this accomplishment should not be diluted by false impressions and incorrect information. Prof Elizabeth Warren got 96% of the vote of the Democratic State Convention because she deserved it. Moreover she never denigrated Marissa DeFranco's efforts and in fact was duly respectful of them. Instead of showing the grace and classiness of Prof Warren, the Globe is trying hard to diminish her accomplishment.

Is it my computer or is Adrian still working on this column?

It's the Globe web site, the article doesn't appear to be there, but you can see the start of the article in the comments window.

DeFranco did " run headlong into an immovable object." The "object" was the elected delegates to the Democratic Convention. There may be some justification for talking about city or town "machines" but it is simply not true that the support the Elizabeth Warren received was anything other than reflective of the desires of Democrats to have a strong, intelligent, focussed, articulate, experienced, thoughtful representative of our political values be the candidate of our party. There have been manipulated convention outcomes in the past...mostly to include more candidates than were actually warranted...but there was not the faintest whiff of manipulation in Springfield this year. Delegates, 95.7% of them, did not want to have a primary that involved Ms. DeFranco, who could not even raise her own signatures to fulfill that requirement. She had to hire people to do that. But she could not hire the independently elected delegates who went to their caucuses to support Elizabeth Warren. In my district, adjacent to DeFranco's, she received four votes out of 112. On the basis of her career, her values and her commitment to what we believe are the best interests of our country, we voted overwhelmingly for Elizabeth Warren. To suggest otherwise is to be woefully uninformed or so cynical that one cannot perceive the facts clearly before you. The Democratic Party supports Elizabeth Warren for good reason.

It is laughable that you write about the "state's Democratic machine" as the immovable object that stopped Marisa DeFranco. As an early advocate of Marisa DeFranco, I had to realize at the point where I was going to collect signatures for her nomination papers what a jopeless cause it was. There was nobody in Sturbridge who had ever heard of Marisa DeFranco except for the people that I had told about her. Marisa DeFranco refused my help to collect siignatures because I was going to try to piggy back on the effort to collect signatures for Elizaebth Warren. DeFranco only wanted true die-hard backers to go out and collect signatures for her. -------------------------------------------------------------------- When you get this far into the campaign as the party convention, and she has garnered so little support around the state, where is the credibility that she is the best choice to defeat Scott Brown? --------------------------------------------------------------------- I am not a die-hard fan of any candidate. I am beholden to no one. I just want a Senator who will do the best job saving this country from the forces of destruction. I never met the Democratic party machine in Massachusetts, but I did decide to work for Elizabeth Warren's campaign and I did vote for her at the convention. --------------------------------------------------------------------- On the other hand, the true immovable object in this state is The Boston Globe machine. Like a pit bull, once it gets its teeth into a phony story, it just cannot let it go. Apparently Adrian Walker got the memo from on high to latch on to this story and try to promote it no matter what cost to personal integrity. I can understand, you have an income to protect and a family to feed. Before I got myself into a position to retire, I had those kinds of worries myself.

GOOD Column Adrian ! Heaven forbid a liberal black man question a "Native American" princess turned tenured Harvard lawyer. You see Adrian you better get in line and keep your mouth shut and "we'll let you keep your job". The total arrogance of the Democratic Party is appalling to say the least.

First of all, there's a typo here: it should say "the state's Democrat machine" -- the Globe's Warren bashing won't ever be taken seriously until you fix this. But seriously, this was entirely a triumph of grassroots organizing at the local level by the Warren campaign. Town/ward caucuses had big turnouts by Warren supporters and they generally elected slates of delegates who were all or nearly all pledged to vote for Warren. This thing was won at those local caucuses back in February -- if DeFranco had managed to get her supporters to turn out in credible numbers at those caucuses, she would have gotten her 15%, but she didn't. I was a first-time delegate elected at my town caucus and there was only one pro-DeFranco person there -- a guy from out of town collecting signatures for her. That's why our town voted 100% for Warren.

Why should they trust her. Uncle Tom Walker is on the Globe plantation working away to toe the line.

When I read about the 96.7% of the votes going for Warren all I can think of is when a third world dictator announces his unanimous re-election. Surely there must have been more 3.3% of the delegates who thought the opponent had something to say. I just wonder what smoke filled back room deals were made to make it look like a monolithic bloc of supporters is for Warren. I guess this is what the liberal columnists would call "In lock-step" if it were a Republican.

As a Latino, I join the black ministers and Mr. Walker in questioning Ms Warren's qualifications. Before the Democrat Machine anointed Ms Warren to be the standard bearer for the Democratic party in the 2012 senatorial election, how many party caucuses or primaries did Ms Warren participate? Since Ms. Warren has been a Harvard professor since 1996, I would have expected a least 8 occasions of physical participation. with an income in excess of $500,000/year, I would have expect contributions of ~$5,000/year to Massachusetts Democratic organizations and standard bearers. In my book, Ms Warren a hypocrite who speaks with many forked tongues.

Mr. Luther, you have no clue...

We wouldn't want to bother elizabeth with those pesky questions about how she lied about her heritage.

The upcoming debates between Warren and Brown will show just how sad and pathetic it is for Warren to even think that she can win this election. She is inexperienced, and comes across as weak, not someone with the courage, and physical strength it takes to carry the weight of that office. If she wants to run for office she should do it locally. I'm sure the people of Cambridge would just love her! Then she can get the experience of holding public office.

I was a delegate to the convention-a first time to the convention. I have been following Elizabeth's opposition to Republican changes to the Bankruptcy code and her work to reign in credit card company abuses since the 1990's. I have followed her hard work overseeing the TARP and creating the Consumer Financial Protection Agency-those were real, difficult accomplishments vs. the Wall Street crowd. I was thrilled that she was willing to run for MA Senate & did what I could to support her efforts, including getting on my town committee and becoming a delegate. I have heard Marisa DeFranco, but she didn't change my opinion that Warren was the best candidate for us, and will make the best Senator of all the candidates. I am not a "cog" in the Democratic machine; I am an informed citizen and voter.
