MBTA to quiz rail car maker on delays

Wants answers to delivery delay

Frustrated state officials have summoned to Boston the chief executive of a South Korean company lagging far behind on a $190 million contract to build commuter rail coaches, demanding to know how the firm can avoid additional delays that would leave riders relying on cramped, dated rail cars.

Already nearly two years late, Hyundai Rotem appears to be in danger of falling further behind on its contract to build 75 coaches, officials said. The modern double-decker cars are supposed to replace some of the MBTA’s oldest single-level cars and expand the size and reliability of its 410-coach commuter rail fleet.

Woo hoo, there must have been a lot of money under the table to get a contract for a company that had no business getting this contract. Its probably still flowing to keep the state from terminating it. The attorneys who handled the deal terms should get an award - "Massachusetts Superbad Lawyers" - for not having an adequate escape clause.

Bring their flak jacket? How about bringing the cars that are YEARS behind schedule - of grow a backbone and the T get a new contractor?

Are these merely being "assembled" in the US plant or are they truly being forged and/or sourced using mostly US made materials? Yes, it matters.

arrrrrrrgggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhh. Please, please, someone hold those that run the MBTA responsible for perpetual failure. The smartest city in the world can surely find better people. The 'T' should offer a multi-million dollar salary competitive with private corporations for it's CEO (director). Rather than increase returns for shareholders, their performance should be evaluated on the T's ability to reduce costs, increase efficiency and improve the quality of service. A substantial bonus should be paid to executives as well as average workers for targets met. Clawbacks would be in place to recover this money in situations such as this.
