When I walked into the Suffolk Downs clubhouse Tuesday morning and saw hundreds upon hundreds of smiling middle aged men slapping each other’s backs, I thought, wow, they really are thinking big here: They’ve gathered every one of their lobbyists under one roof.
Ends up, those were racetrack workers and supportive neighbors. The lobbyists, strategists, and communications specialists stood quietly calculating and recalculating their monthly retainers.

BUT ONLY ON A 24/7/52 BASIS AND ONLY practiced locally at or on BEACON HILL and CITY HALL. i ain't talking DC as thats a whole other story.mcgrory, you once wrote that either beacon hill or the legislature was " AN UNHOLY MESS." ever since than , nothing but silencio. howcome?????what, ya think things have changed ? not for the taxpayers they ain't. ma
"I am purely empirical," Loveman said of himself in 2010. "I am only driven where the evidence takes me.". I dont understand why our legislators want to talk about building casinos that enable people to throw their money to people who only care about the empiicals. We can take the same money and energy to build casinos and put it into something good like renewble energy and improved efficiency that will help people save money and not have to work so darn hard, so that we can all spend more time with family and friends and still have money to pay for food, housing, education and healthcare.
The evidence is there is a target rich population of people who will gamble with money they can least afford to lose. I'm not agianst casinos, I'm against the state sponsored charade of positioning these as economic saviors. Call them what they are; state sanctioned money extraction factories that will be frequented by lower income people. It is comical to think a couple living in Dover will say: "what about getting away to East Boston for a romantic weekend? The sun setting over the tank farm on RT 1 reminds me of the warm glow of sun set in Sedona."
Too bad McGrory didn't get over paying for his lunch with this stream of fawning praise that seems likely to get him his own pot of slots coins if and when the Revere Gambling Palace ever opens (after the billion dollar development fund is expended, of course). McGrory has the rep of being a hard-headed columnist. George Frazier would have treated this topic like he treated Louise Day Hicks. McGrory needs to hit the morgue and see if he can dig up some of George's literary duende to include in his own efforts.
I'm with NativeBos and carafram. We've been sold a bill of goods that not going to pay off like we were told. I was against casinos altogether for the reasons NativeBos and carafram stated. On the other hand, I don't believe in beating my head against a brick wall and casinos are coming whether I like it or not. That said, Suffolk is probably a "right place," if there's such a thing. Maybe it will help the survival of thoroughbreds, impressive animals, which are in danger of going the way of mules and oxen. It's also probably good that it's a longer MBTA trip from most of Boston, requiring multiple trains or buses.
