Flyover sought to ease proposed Suffolk Downs casino traffic

Track officials unveil roadway plans for proposed resort in East Boston

Suffolk Downs would build a two-lane flyover on the northbound side of Route 1A to relieve one of its most consistent bottlenecks, as well as add lanes, lights, and other improvements around the track to help carry the traffic created by its proposed casino resort, track officials said Friday. The flyover would allow drivers to bypass the Boardman Street intersection, which is regularly tied up during the morning and evening rush hour. Other measures to reduce traffic could include new lanes and traffic signals, as well as an incentive program to encourage casino employees to use public transportation.

I'm no expert on traffic planning so I'm not qualified to judge whether Suffolk's proposal for improvements is adequate. In any case, I'm sure negotiations with the state and cities will result in some tweaking. The major pinch point on 1A is Bell Circle, which has been neglected for decades. Although I think it's too far from Suffolk Downs to expect them to pay for improvements there, it should prod the state to finally develop a plan that uses fly-overs and ramps to eliminate traffic signals and allow vehicles to flow smoothly into VFW Parkway and American Legion Highway.

Repeating a comment I made to an article yesterday, if the state could get the federal government to participate by actually extending Interstate 90 all the way to Wonderland or to Rte 16 the feds might pick up a good chunk of the cost. Two or three ramps to a service road would keep local businesses and residential areas accessible. One ramp would exit right into the Suffolk Downs property. This would solve the Bell Circle problem as well.

Hey, forget a flyover, for "$2-3 billion" the artery could be depressed, ask Matt Amorello!

Obviously, unlike me, you're a traffic planning expert. Still the estimate of 10-15,000 additional trips a day on Burbank Highway, which already handles over 60,000, doesn't justify a billion dollar highway project through residential neighborhoods, no matter who's picking up the costs. It would be a terrible waste and disrupt countless lives, something you apparently don't care about.
