At a Friday briefing on developers’ plans for managing traffic around a proposed Suffolk Downs casino, I felt a strong urge to jump up and kiss Chip Tuttle.
This was an unusual response for me. Although the track’s chief operating officer is a good guy, I’m not normally a huge fan of his work: For many reasons, I’ve long believed casinos are a bad idea, especially the way we’re doing them in Massachusetts.

remember abraham, BEAUTY is in the EYES of the beholder. after reading this piece, i'm not sure what part of your anatomy said BEAUTY is located at or in. ma
I only occasionally have to make that wretched drive from the North Shore into Logan or the airport, but when I heard of the casino plans I winced at what that would mean for people who do that run often. I can't speak to the wisdom of these grand plans, but this article is wry and was fun to read.
And in a few years, when that fly-over has gotten old and in need of repair, who pays for what? Actually, what with quality control issues these days, which are always triggered by people cutting corners to cut cost, the repairs will likely be needed a couple of months after it opens. So will you be on the side which is saying the fly-over has destroyed the neighborhood and needs to be removed entirely? Maybe this piece is intended as a sarcastic reflection on everyone advocating for their own narrow self interest. If so, I need to re-read it to see where the clue is that you really don't believe that a fly over would be a good thing. Or, on the other hand, if you really want a fly over for your own convenience, look into the statistics as to how much the big dig improved the commute from the south shore into the city. What has it given the south shore crowd, a couple of minutes off their commute? There are fundamental life-style issues that need to be re-examined. And there are huge questions as to how public money should be allocated. Those, along with the narrow mindedness of the gambling advocates, will provide for more than a few discussions.
Unions would support legalized brothels for the construction jobs, but the girls would have to vote Democrat.
how is it possible that anyone could whine after reading such a marvelous commentary?? it takes a jaded cynic just waiting to die to pen the bile below ... thanks for an offbeat take on the topic du jour. one thing is constant: Ms. Abraham reliably uses a linguistic scalpel to reveal hopeful aspects of stories that are beaten into the ground by Boston media and the comment hags who haunt the hereabouts. thanks, Ms. Abraham. made my day.
If you were really a clear and forward thinker, you would advocate a second casino located at Wonderland (in the old dog track parking lot) and then one on the Lynnway so that we in Nahant could have an extended flyway from Boston to the Nahant Causeway. Let the Marbleheaders take care of themselves.
Yveee babe... This scheme for a Route 1A overdrive is not...I repeat... NOT, girlie... proposed so a self-absorbed Aussiette with a public typewriter and an extremely weakneed editor can toss some worthless selfishments on an issue that is very troubling to lost and lots of people... Go on home to whatever dinky little burb you disgraced with your residence and please find an early Quantas flight... The Blob always had a rep as a "writer's newspaper"...usually to the benefit of the reading public... You have just proven that such a managerial concept has a major, major downside ...
Mr. or Ms. Boatwrote is right. There is no time or space in public discourse for humor or irony. The only effective means of persuasion is bile and personal insult. And the last thing you want to do is think, because, if you already have the truth in hand, what is the point of listening, thinking, or dialogue? Actually, the listening part just might be helpful to Boatwrote because Ms. Abraham seems to have serious reservations on the benefits of gambling flyways in the urban ointment.
The devil is truly in the details, though, which in this case is posted on a video on the Suffolk Downs web site. The flyover would eliminate 1 light on the northbound side of 1A and replace it with... get this, 2 new lights. Giving you a net of +1 light over what you have today. Still willing to take this deal?
