Its success came courtesy of the Vatican, which sparked readers’ interest by issuing a warning that Sister Margaret Farley’s “Just Love’’ contradicted Catholic teaching. The edict was the latest in a series of recent crackdowns by the Vatican and U.S. bishops on American nuns who have pushed the boundaries of Catholic doctrine.
