Daughter’s death casts long shadow

For Thomas and Virginia Payne, the parents of murder victim Rebecca Payne, Monday’s arraignment of accused killer Cornell Smith marks the beginning of the end of their time in the United States. At the trial’s conclusion, they will move permanently to the Seychelles, Virginia’s country of birth. Staying in the country that swallowed up their child is just too painful, they said. “You hear about shootings all the time, some other poor parents grieving - it’s a constant thing. It brings it all back,’’ Nicholas Payne said.
