Man, 20, dies in crash on Mass. Ave. span

A 20-year-old Pennsylvania man was killed Monday afternoon in a crash involving a motorcycle, a pickup truck, and a sport utility vehicle on the Massachusetts Avenue bridge connecting Boston and Cambridge, State Police said.

Vail Cerullo of Chester Springs, Pa., was treated at the scene after the accident occurred around 2:25 p.m. and then transported to Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to State Police.

A Facebook profile for Cerullo shows a fit young man astride a red motorcycle. The profile shows that Cerullo graduated from Hill School in Pottstown, Pa., in 2009.

Preliminary reports from State Police indicate Cerullo was traveling from Boston to Cambridge when an 18-year-old Gloucester man driving the pickup made an improper turn in front of Cerullo’s motorycle.

The motorcycle crashed into the pickup, and Cerullo was thrown to the ground, where he was run over by an SUV, State Police said in a statement released late Monday.

The pickup truck driver, who was not identified, was taken to Cambridge Hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening, State Police said. The male operator of the SUV was not injured but was being examined for emotional distress, according to State Police.

A damaged motorcycle could be seen lying on its side, while another vehicle also was stopped, with heavy damage, about 20 yards away, at about 3 p.m. on the bridge.

Traffic was stopped both ways for approximately four hours for rescue operations, evidence gathering, and vehicle removal, but the bridge was reopened shortly before 5:30 p.m.

The crash is under investigation. Police do not believe alchohol was a factor.
