Reliance on smartphones leaving hikers in a bind
Smart phones are the ultimate pocket tool, but they are often useless in hiking situations, where cell reception is scant. Worse, NH officials report too many hikers are going into the woods unprepared, replying on their cell phones to bail them out of bad situations. But for all its tricks, a phone can't keep you warm or start a fire. It doesn't even have a toothpick. And too many are abandoning map and compass for the phone’s GPS.
