$1.9m set for 2 communities hit by tornado

The state has announced a total of $1.9 million in tornado relief grants to help the city of Springfield and the town of Monson. The two communities were hit hard by the June 1, 2011, tornadoes.

Secretary of Energy and Environmental Affairs Richard Sullivan said Springfield will receive $1 million for debris removal, reforestation, and repairs to public parks. The city will also get $400,000 to plant new trees on public property.

Monson will receive $500,000 for a number of projects, including repairs to recreational facilities and the design of a new downtown river walk.

The grants are the first from a $4 million state fund that was announced by Governor Deval Patrick on the one-year anniversary of the storms, which claimed three lives in Massachusetts.
