Scott Brown pushes for new Stolen Valor Act

Senator Scott Brown made a pitch Friday for his Stolen Valor Act of 2011, a bill proposing to modify the Stolen Valor Act of 2005 that was ruled unconstitutional this week by the Supreme Court.

Brown’s bill would punish people who misrepresent their military service in order to profit.

If someone has committed fraud then there's probably already a law on the books for dealing with that. This idolization of the military and support for the military industrial complex, defense contractors and defense budget makes my stomach turn. The timing here is PURELY for political purposes. We must all keep our respect for what soldiers do in context. The tail is wagging the dog.

Hmm...While the Great American Hero is at it, maybe he can explain to his constituents how a guy with 34 years in the Massachusetts Army National Guard (and a current rank of Lieutenant Colonel) never went on an actual deployment, despite serving during Desert Storm, the Bosnian peace-keeping mission, Iraq and Afghanistan. He runs around in his fatigues looking like G.I. Joe...a strange outfit for a JAG officer. Maybe this latest legislative gambit is just designed to cover his lack of real military experience. Wonder why so many people are conned by our junior senator? What was it Samuel Johnson said about patriotism?

Hmmmm . . . .what about a "Prevaricated Access to Royalty" Act, whereby elected officials who claim to have met frequently with "kings and queens" are censured on the floor of the Senate, and booted out of office on election day?

Dear Republican Senator Brown Enough of this pandering for votes that you have been spending all your energy on. How about working on something of substance like jobs! I find this latest effort on your part to get veterans vote particularly offensive. The fact of the matter is that in all walks of life i.e. military, business, and politics people are always exaggerating their accomplishments or the amount of work that they are doing. As a decorated combat veteran I find this effort by you insulting especially after your exaggerated importance of secret meetings with kings and queens, prime ministers. That is exactly what you are trying to make a crime. So are you going to put yourself in jail? Jobs not a bunch of rhetoric is needed now. Signed a Veteran that was for brown but now is in Elizabeth Warrens camp…

@tjbwhs and others: Brown's unit was not activated so he did not deploy. Could he have switched? Yes. In fact, he did just that, so he now belongs to the Maryland National Guard. Yes, our US Senator is no longer a member of the Massachusetts National Guard. He switched so that he could get a job at the Pentagon while serving as a US Senator. Probably greasing his own track when he loses this election. As for his military record, it is heavily suspect and redacted. This is the story in Scott Brown's own words before he heard Elizabeth Warren's footsteps. Pandering is the least of his transgressions: http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2010/01/07/guard_service_a_key_to_candidate_brown/

The law is declared unconstitutional by the SCOTUS, Brown pursues a new bill. What part of unconstitutional do you not understand?
