Lanes reopen on I-495 after car fire snarls traffic

State Police say they have reopened the right lane and the breakdown lane on Interstate 495 southbound in Lowell, where traffic has been stalled due to a car fire.

The fire comes as drivers are headed home or to vacation spots at the beginning of a hot summer weekend.

State Police had reported just after 4 p.m. that they had closed the highway.

The boston.com traffic information service reported that the highway was closed between Exit 41 and Exit 37.
