Hiker dies at Purgatory chasm in Sutton

SUTTON — A 39-year-old man died Wednesday afternoon after falling some 80 feet in Purgatory Chasm State Reservation, according to S.J. Port, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Conservation and Recreation.

Matthew M. Felts of Uxbridge fell while hiking, according to the office of District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr.

State Police are investigating.

Port said the victim fell from a trail called Fat Man’s Misery, at one of the park’s highest points.

The accident occurred around 4:30 p.m. A ranger saw the man fall onto a park trail.

Jonna Dube, a registered nurse from Dudley, said her family had just finished their hike when they heard about the fall and she and her son joined rescue crews and found the man.

Hikers were being turned away from the area.
