At the MBTA’s Wellington Carhouse, a team of 57 employees works around the clock to keep some of the T’s oldest cars in service, meeting the demands of growing ridership. The Orange Line cars, all of them 31 to 33 years old, and having logged 1.5 million miles, must be coaxed five or even 10 more years by the team at this Medford shop while the MBTA marshals the funds and works toward replacing the fleet.
