Longtime Mass. police chief to retire

The man thought to be the longest serving police chief in Massachusetts is retiring. Sheffield Chief James McGarry announced in a letter to the Board of Selectmen that he will step down at the end of the month after 41 years as chief and 45 years overall with the department. In 2010, town voters overwhelmingly approved a measure allowing McGarry to stay on past the state-mandated retirement age of 65; he is now 67. McGarry wrote in his letter to the selectmen that it has been an onor and privileg to serve as chief. Town Administrator Rhonda LaBombard told the Berkshire Eagle that McGarry has “a wealth of knowledge.” (AP)
