Massachusetts residents living longer

Life expectancy in Massachusetts reached an all-time high in 2009, as the rate of deaths from major killers, such as heart disease and cancer, continued to decline. Life expectancy varied considerably by town or city, according to a report released Wednesday by the state Department of Public Health. Injuries of all kinds made up the third-leading cause of death in 2009, the most recent year for which data are available. Opioid-related deaths rose sharply between 2000 and 2009, though the number has leveled off some in recent years. Deaths related to HIV continued to fall dramatically. Three-quarters of HIV-related deaths in 2009 were among people age 45 or older, suggesting people are living longer with the disease. —CHELSEA CONABOY
