Massachusetts House leaders say they want to declare a sales tax holiday on Aug. 11 and Aug. 12.

The bill is intended to provide relief for consumers while stimulating sales for local merchants, according to a joint statement from House Speaker Robert A. DeLeo and Brian Dempsey, chairman of House Committee on Ways and Means.

“The House continues to show its support for local businesses, which keep jobs in Massachusetts,” DeLeo and Dempsey said.
