Kansas hospital warns patients that health worker may have exposed them to hepatitis C

Kansas officials have begun notifying about 460 former patients at Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kan., that they may have been exposed to hepatitis C by a traveling hospital technician, who is accused of causing an outbreak of the disease in New Hampshire, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment said Friday. Federal prosecutors in New Hampshire said Thursday that David Kwiatkowski was charged with obtaining controlled substances by fraud and tampering with a consumer product. He allegedly infected patients while working at Exeter Hospital in New Hampshire. Kwiatkowski also worked in the cardiac catheterization laboratory at Hays Medical Center from May 24, 2010, through Sept. 22, 2010, according to the health department. Kwiatkowski, who grew up in Michigan, worked as a ‘‘traveler’’ sent by staffing agencies to hospitals around the country, usually for temporary jobs. (AP)
