A Maine man who said he brought a loaded gun into a showing of the latest Batman movie is facing federal criminal charges after authorities said he lied when he applied to purchase a weapon on Friday.
Timothy Courtois, 49, of Biddeford is being charged in federal court in Maine with lying on an application to buy a firearm and related weapons violations, according to court records. Authorities found several guns and a marijuana-like substance in Courtois’s car after he was arrested when he drove at speeds of up to 112 miles per hour on the Maine Turnpike Sunday, the federal affidavit states.
Courtois told investigators after his arrest that the substance in question was K2, a synthetic drug similar to marijuana, and he admitted to smoking K2 and marijuana, according to the affidavit. “Several times during the interview Courtois asked us if we would get him some weed so he could smoke weed and eat Chinese food,” the affidavit states.
Courtois also lied when he allegedly stated Friday on an application to buy a firearm that he was not addicted to marijuana or any other controlled substance, according to court records.
The Maine Department of Public Safety said Monday that Courtois told authorities after he was stopped that he had been en route to Derry, N.H., to shoot a former boss.
‘Several times during the interview Courtois asked us if we would get him some weed so he could smoke weed and eat Chinese food.’
According to the federal affidavit, he also told investigators that he had been driving to Derry to attend an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting.
Courtois said he brought a loaded gun to a Saturday night screening of the Batman film at a theater in Saco, Maine, said the Public Safety Department. That is being investigated by authorities.
The statement from Courtois about bringing a gun into the Saco theater was especially chilling because it came only days after a gunman opened fire at another screening of the movie in Aurora, Colo., killing 12 people and injuring 58.
