Mayor Thomas M. Menino will not back down from his stance against Chick-fil-A for its opposition to gay marriage, but he acknowledged Thursday that he cannot do anything to prevent the restaurant chain from setting up shop in Boston.
“Originally, I said I would do everything I can to stop them.’’ Menino said in an interview at City Hall. “And that was mostly using the bully pulpit of being mayor of the city and getting public support. But I didn’t say I would not allow them to go for permits or anything like that. I just said we would do everything we can, bully pulpit-wise.”

Who the hell does Menino think he is ? Last we knew Menino is the mayor and a fascist dictator. Keep your personal views to yourself. In this case it would be up to customers to decide whether they will patronage a business. He overstepped and is now a fascist. He said "I would do everything I can to stop them." He should be subject to a lawsuit for actions he takes that is outside of his powers as mayor. How would he like it if the taxpayers could dictate what type of diet he should be on to improve his appearance or what religion he should worship.
Mumbles has no clue about business, of course it fits his agenda. Do you know why businesses aren't hiring Tom, guess, of course most of them are afraid to speak up for fear of retaliation, the government tough guys. Expect another 4 years of stagnant hiring, by then, lots of businesses will be gone. Keep up the good work, Tommy.
This is the work of the liberal though police. Recall, the crime of Chick Fil-A , was that its CEO expressed his opinion on a hot cultural issue. Menino would have been no better for acting this way because the CEO likes the president, or does not like the Red Sox. Chick Fil A is a wonderful, Christian, family oriented business. Any city should be proud to have such a business in their midst. Not in the liberal bastions of Boston and Chicago, where the thought police will enter your mind, and force you to only have thoughts that meet the approval of the General Secretary.
This is backfiring big time on the Mayor of Boston and the Mayor of Chicago. They look like fools and the bigots that they are. They can discriminate against those who DO NOT BELIEVE in gay marriage, which at this point is the majority of the country, yet they call themselves "all inclusive". How can that be? If Mayor Menino feels he has the right to express his opinions, then most certainly so does the CEO of Chick-Fil-A.
Next Wednesday is "Chick-Fil-A Day" around the country. Find the one nearest to you and patronize them...regularly if you can. There is one in the Burlington Mall and one in the North Shore Mall in Peabody. Hopefully, there will be many more around. I've never eaten at one before, but I sure will now! And their food looks pretty good.
Why pay attention to this nonsense? This is Mumbles having another attack of egocentricity. Remember the 1,000 foot skyscraper he demanded be built at Winthrop Square? And his urge that somebody - maybe the Coast Guard over which Mumbles doesn't even have wind power - stop liquified natural gas tankers from carrying their cargo up the harbor to the processing terminal in Everett? All these schemes in the name of Mumbles having a severe case of gas. Now it's the religious beliefs of some 'Colonel Sanders' type wannabe. Views that Mumbles claimed to think needed bullying out of town... or was Mumbles merely trying to wage his own gaseous view of psychological warfare against the chicken man's shops somewhere along the Freedom Trail, like under Mumbles' office window in the fortress called Boston City Hall? Somebody evidently gave Mumbles a dose of Maalox Plus, causing him to ... well we won't talk about that... but he backed off.
Menino the private citizen has First Amendment rights. Menino the mayor does NOT. The First Amendment protects the people from the government. Menino is using his position in gov't to bully a law abiding company. For the record, I find Chick-fil-A's opinions disgusting. But they have the right to express them without being victimized by government harassment.
how is this not reverse discrimination?
We are the hollow men We are the stuffed men Leaning together Headpiece filled with straw. Alas! Our dried voices, when We whisper together Are quiet and meaningless As wind in dry grass Or rats' feet over broken glass In our dry cellar Shape without form, shade without colour, Paralysed force, gesture without motion; Those who have crossed With direct eyes, to death's other Kingdom Remember us - if at all - not as lost Violent souls, but only As the hollow men The stuffed men.
How is it possibly reverse discrimination? Calling someone out on discrimination is not discriminatory.
no - they have an opinion and people are saying (Chicago, Boston) they "can't" open here based on their opinion - discrimination
Assumedly, the citizens of Boston should know the beliefs of the CEOs of current Boston businesses and institutions receive the Mayor's approval and support and are in noways regarded by him as prejudiced or bigoted. Assumedly, the CEOs of current Boston businesses and institutions will remain tight-lipped.
It wouldn't be a hot button issue if there weren't two sides of it. He didn't say he was going to discriminate against gay couples, he said he was opposed to gay marriage...an IMPORTANT distinction. All are entitled to an opinion as long as it's Menino's...clear persecution for his beliefs...HIGHLY illegal.
