Republican Victor Moffitt got attention during the 2010 campaign when, as a gubernatorial candidate, he proposed building a world-class aquarium in Rhode Island as a way to spur the state’s economy. Moffitt lost in the primary, but he is continuing to push his dream of building a $100 million, 350,000-square-foot aquarium in the Ocean State. Moffitt has established the Oceans Aquarium Research & Science Center, known as the OARS Center, as a nonprofit organization, assembled a volunteer staff, and started looking for sites near Interstate 95. He is holding a golf tournament fund-raiser on Wednesday at the Montaup Country Club in Portsmouth.
