Boston police say a man who fatally shot another man near the Greenway Sunday morning may have been acting in self-defense.
Police and Suffolk prosecutors investigating the shooting believe that a verbal altercation led to shots being fired by two individuals near the intersection of Broad Street and Surface Road, police said.
One of the men involved — Dumayne Chin, 25, of Boston — sustained fatal injuries in the shooting and was pronounced dead at Tufts Medical Center, police said.
The second individual, a 33-year-old man whose name has not been released, possessed a registered firearm and a valid license to carry it.
The man surrendered his firearm to police and has so far cooperated with the investigation, authorities said. Because it appears that he may have acted in self-defense, the man has not been charged at this time, police said.
Boston homicide detectives are still gathering and evaluating evidence connected with the case.
Suffolk prosecutors will conduct a grand jury investigation into the shooting, said Jake Wark, spokesman for District Attorney Daniel F. Conley.
