An injured man was carried off Ballston Beach in Truro Monday.

A swimmer was bitten on the ankle Monday, apparently by a shark while in the water off Ballston Beach in Truro, police said. The injury was not believed to be life-threatening.

The man, who was not identified, swam to shore and spoke with rescue personnel as he was taken to Cape Cod Hospital after a 911 call came in about 3:30 p.m., said dispatcher Martha Wheeler of the Truro police. About 7 p.m., the man was being prepared for transfer to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, said Ana Paula, a secretary in the emergency room at Cape Cod Hospital.

Witnesses at the beach reported seeing a shark fin, but police could not confirm its presence, Wheeler said.

The beach, part of the Cape Cod National Seashore and managed by the town of Truro, remained open at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Wheeler said.

She said authorities did not know the man’s name or where he was from.

Jessica Wynne of New York was enjoying a day at the beach with her family when the attack happened.

“We were looking out on the water and noticed there were a lot of seals in the water,” said Wynne, a photographer. “We were joking, ‘If there are seals in the water, there must be sharks.’ ”

A short time later, Wynne said, a fin flew up in the air about 500 yards from shore and “slammed down” on one of two men swimming in the area.

“[The men] started swimming frantically toward the shore, and everyone started running toward the water,” Wynne said.

Swimmers fled the water, and paramedics arrived within five minutes, Wynne said.
