Avoiding Olympics spoilers is an event all its own

To keep Olympics results a surprise, Kate O’Malley of Chelmsford avoids Facebook like a champion. She skips e-mail alerts from news organizations, silences the radio when Olympics coverage comes on, pleads with colleagues not to discuss the games in front of her.

But even that may not be enough to shut out news about Thursday’s women’s gymnastics finals until Friday evening — yes, Friday evening — when O’Malley finally sits down with her husband to enjoy the taped broadcast.

I have stopped reading bostonglobe.com on days I am going to watch the broadcast. I hope many of your advertisers read this, and you reconsider your decision to report results in real time on the front page.

I'm old enough to remember the delayed broadcasts of Wimbledon Tennis before it was televised as, "Breakfast at Wimbledon," with the great Bud Collins. Several of us would avoid the communication outlets at that time and phone calls from family and friends until the telecast. We called it news lockdown. And we were successful. What a great surprise and thrill to see the upset of Arthur Ashe over Jimmy Connors, everyone's pick to easily defeat Mr. Ashe. For the past few days I've successfully avoided any and all information about the Olympic Results. No digital Globe, catch up with it at end of NBC replay. iPod and Kindle/iPad getting lots of use. All tunes all day in the car. What a complete joy to see Gabby win last night. Very enjoyably intense. It was real time for me. Also the Phelps' swimming events, my characterization, thank you very much. Looking forward to the track and field avoidance next. Some of you, as Mikey said about Kix, "Try it, you'll like it.". Like the athletes, you've got to focus.
