Crash in Canton causes early morning traffic slowdown on I-93; roadway reopened

Drivers on Interstate 93 south were confined to only one lane early this morning after a dump truck slammed into an overpass at the intersection of Interstate 95, police said.

State Police spokeswoman Nicole Morrell said the crash happened at 3:20 a.m. in Canton and that the town’s fire department and EMS responded to the scene. The driver was taken to Norwood Hospital.

Morrell said the vehicle was a 2006 Mack truck with the Naughton Construction Company, which is based in Canton.

The dump truck had to be removed from the overpass using a crane, said Michael Verseckes, spokesman for the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.

He said structural engineers determined that there was no damage to the overpass, but that they will follow up with a more thorough inspection.

A highway sign that was attached to the overpass by brackets was removed because it was loosened by the crash, Verseckes said.

He said it will be put back on the overpass either tonight or within the next few days.

The scene was cleared shortly before 7 a.m. and traffic is moving freely, he said.
