Seared by abuse, Scott Brown somehow found his way

The senator was shaped by his dreams and ambition, but also by a childhood in which his principal goal had to be simple survival

WAKEFIELD — When Senator Scott Brown was 9 years old, his mother, a sometime cocktail waitress overwhelmed by caring for her two children, sent him to live with her sister for a year. Brown recalls a miserable household of onerous rules and a cousin who mocked him for his absent parents. But nothing was more wretched for him than the hamburger dinners they shared.

Although there were five people at the table, Brown’s aunt generally prepared only nine of the juicy burgers, declaring that Brown’s mother was not giving her enough money to feed him the second helping the others could have. Brown, as he recalls it, was routinely denied the extra hamburger he craved, and “I would always be served last.”

brown should consider going into teaching, mentoring or coaching.....might do a better job there than he has done representing Massachusetts in the Senate...

Explains the lies we hear of his Kings and Queens meetings - nothing in story explains why he should be a US Senator or why he does not fight for the poor and abused people in the US and around the world.

So according to his own family, Scott has a history of issues of self-control as well as a history of making up stories or telling lies to get sympathy. I suspected that last year. This man has no shame and will say anything about anyone to get elected to a real tterm. He has performed well for Wall Street in Washington, we need to let them give him a job.

Geezzzz..a lot of whining at a most opportune time. Talk about a new way of pandering for votes . My first thoughts are about why is this guy a Republican ? His low/working class life is usually the stuff Democrats often are steeped in. He goes out of his way in his political advertising to solicit famous DEmocratic office holders who seem to enthusiastically endorse him, so why run as a Republican ? If you quack like a Democratic duck, you must be s Democrat ! A Democrat in Republican's clothing ? He votes more with his Democratic colleagues in the Senate except when directed by the Minority leader to tow the mark and vote Republican. As a Democrat and a New Englander, I like Scott Brown, but I seriously am against him for being a REpublican when it's counted in the past sessions. He really needs to declare himself fish or fowl...and stop trying to act like a Republican. I think Elizabeth Warren is the real article and the people of Massachusetts should be very proud to to have the opportunity to vote for her as their US Senator.

The man needs therapy and Adult Children of Alcoholic's Meetings. I am a survivor so I know what I am talking about. And yes, it is very difficult for an ACOA (adult child of an alcoholic) to sift truth from fiction. Many of the worst memories are repressed for years, if not for a lifetime. And some of the trivial stuff gets really distorted. That said, for me, it is totally heartbreaking that the man shows no sympathy for those still going through those horrors when he votes down any legislation that might help them.

I hope Scott is seeing a therapist on a regular basis. There is no way he can go through that kind of turbulent childhood without some psychological scarring. I can identify with some of his stories though. Parents today can be accused of doting far too much on their kids but they truly love them more and are more involved in their lives. As a teenager in the 70's none of my friends or my parents had any idea nor cared what we were doing half the time. Like Scott, I was lucky to make it out of that period in one piece.

Great Article. It's unbelievable to me how people can neglect and harm children, it feels like it's part of my DNA to want to protect kids from harm.

from article: "But for those people I could have been a very different person. . . . I should have been one of those people that you read about." My reaction: "I just did."

I guess that it is safe to say that you are proud to vote for candidates who lie for their own benefit. Just what we need in Washington, another moonbat who knows what's good for us.

More info than I care to know about Brown. Sounds like he had a rough go of it. Would be nice if he supported people over corporate profits. His political leanings don't seem to match his past. Sounds like he wants to enact policies that will be "payback" to his "white trash" relatives. Spitefull and vengeful.

I think the most telling reaction from those who helped Scott Brown was that of the principal who said that Scott was well known as a boy longing for acceptance. Ray Flynn et al's supportive "he's a regular guy" now says it all. He has proven himself to all the men who love him. Too bad he has little empathy for his mother who grew up thinking that she needed a man to make it in society. Her low wages and lack of opportunity get very little play in Scott's memoir. A memoir that countless adults his age can relate to without whining the way he seems to.

This is an impressive story, and tells a lot about the man. Scott Brown is a model of how hard work and determination can bring out the best in a person. He is one of the hardest-working people in public life, and has a knack for relating to people and their problems. Find him at a local event (not hard to do) and see for yourself. Those with an axe to grind or a pre-formed opinion (including some, but not the majority of, his family) may belittle his history or quibble about details. But the courts and jails are full of people who gave up when faced with similar challenges. This man kept going. As Senator, Brown has been focused on jobs for MA as his #1 priority. Reading his story, you can see why. His opponent wants to run against Wall Street. Nice try, but how many MA people will be put back to work by that crusade? MA needs someone who knows the importance of the basics.

Still would really rather know Brown's OWN ACTUAL IDEAS for stimulating the economy while reducing the federal deficit. So far the Scott Brown Radio Reports have been disappointingly underwhelming. Also, in light of the Sandusky scandal, does Brown, the sexual abuse victim, really feel its OK to shield his abuse perpetrator from public scrutiny?

Kings and queens? Being asked for advice by President Obama and Hillary Clinton? Scott brown wouln't know the truth if it leaped up and bit him in the a**. He has his own version of reality, including the myth that he "reaches across the aisle."

I see a liar and whiner. Funny how virtually EVERYONE around him tells a different story. The behavior of the adult Scott Brown (particularly his enthusiasm for Jeff Perry, who heard nothing and did nothing while his subordinate criminally abused a 15 year old woman) strengthens the credibility of his detractors. His "Kings and Queens" comments, his blustering about the fake OBL death photos, his absurd claims of influence -- all of them reinforce the picture painted by his family and friends. For a genuine picture of the REAL Scott Brown, watch an old Leave It To Beaver episode and pay close attention to Eddie Haskell.

RBMMD, EXACTLY correct. As a matter of fact my question is is it all true? Some in his family i.e. his aunt and her daughters I think dispute it. Her story is that Brown was rather incorrigible and not used to family rules. I am not saying his story is not true but if any of it is fabricated in the least it means HUGE trouble for Brown. Some of those he indicts are still living. Plus as you so adeptly say in this day and age Brown is going to let the perpetrators of the sex abuse he suffered at the camp he attended off the hook? I don't get it. Again, I am utterly empathetic to his story if in fact it is all true but one wonders. I hope those who investigate for the Globe pursue the veracity of these very very damaging claims. Moreover, this should NOT be the centrifugal part of the importance of this Senate seat and the vital importance of electing Warren. She is INFINITELY and I do mean INFINITELY more qualified for this seat than the know little meeting with kings and queens Brown. The bottom line is Scott Brown in the majority of his votes sides with the banks and his Republican Party. He is NOT for the middle class, working class or women at all. His defeat, as I see it, is imperative and there is NO better candidate on planet earth than Elizabeth Warren. I have met her three times and was extraordinarily impressed with her economic genius. She is simply magnificent.

Whether this is a puff piece or a hit piece (it's hard to tell!), this story has no business on the front page of a major metropolitan daily. There is NOTHING in this story that helps any voter come to a better decision about the choice we all face in November. Nothing about his character as an adult, his values as an adult, nothing about how these claimed influences affect his politics or worldview. This piece has less substance than a Sunday Morning cinnamon roll.

test

I knew Larry Mcshane longer than Scott did, I will tell you he is not the monster that he is made to be. I am sure Scott was a punk and came into the relationship with a big chip on his shoulder. Larry was a funny, generous guy and there was never a nasty word ever toward me or my family. I think Scott's Mom was an opportunist and used him for his money. As for Scott Browns rock throwing, I know 1st hand that he throws them in anger.(Scott remember one night in Quincy 1978,I do) He is a story teller and I know what he says is a lie. Why doesnt he give us the name of the wicked camp councelor like he did all the wicked stepfathers. That is info that could truly help others by not allowing other children fall victim, Myself I think that is a made up story as well. Scott Brown is not what he wants everyone to think. Whine Whine Whine. I will not go to that pitty party! Go Elizabeth!

I really have no idea why this article is on the front page of The Globe. It is a rehash of Scott Brown's book which was sufficiently covered when it came out. I am sorry this young man suffered so as a child. The system did not work for him. It is difficult to understand why his sympathy does not extend to children who need this help today. He is a mediocre senator who really doesn't seem to know who he is. He is not bipartisan, he is opportunistic. He just seems so sad. Also, to The System Works: Your comments are so mean spirited they are embarassing.

Fewer of us are registering as Democrat or Republican ... Scott Brown isn't perfect, but he acts and thinks independently and is the closest to my ideal Senator I've ever seen.

Thank You Sentoe Brown for the review.

Low wages? Lack of opportunity? She was an alcoholic who was drawn to alcoholic, abusive men. She failed herself and her children. Too bad so many political partisans here have so little sympathy for someone who survived such a dysfunctional childhood.
