Richard R. Tisei will release his first television advertisement, a soft biographical spot, Wednesday morning as he attempts to unseat US Representative John F. Tierney in the state’s most competitive House race.
The ad shows Tisei, a Wakefield realtor who has served as the top Republican in the State Senate, talking about his personal and professional connection to the congressional district. Between the close-up shots of the candidate are images of the seaport in Gloucester and of Tisei shaking hands in a diner.
There is no mention of Tisei’s political affiliation, a common omission for Republicans running in Massachusetts, where Democrats hold a registration advantage. Instead, Tisei emphasizes his ties to the community and his message of independence and bipartisanship.
“I went to school in this district,” Tisei says in the ad. “I own a small business in this district. This is a district where people are hardworking; they’re independent-minded and they want to see the same in their congressman.”
The ad is also a departure from the harsh attacks that have so far defined the race. Tisei has criticized Tierney over his wife’s connection to her brothers’ gambling ring, while Tierney has said Tisei will march in lockstep with the conservative leadership of the Republican party.
The ad will run on cable television in the Northeastern Massachusetts congressional district for at least the next four weeks, at a cost of $43,000 per week, Tisei said.
“I want to introduce myself to people the right way,” Tisei said Tuesday.
He said the ad will be replaced by other ads in about a month.
