Did you really think that Whitey Bulger was going to sit there in the courthouse named after his old neighbor Joe Moakley and merely take notes on a yellow legal pad while federal prosecutors painted him as a killer of women, an enabler of drug dealers, and, egads, worst of all, a rat?
It was always in the cards that Whitey Bulger was going to take the stand in his own defense. His lawyer, J.W. Carney Jr., has been saying as much for much of the last year, making it official with Monday’s announcement.

Besides the FBI, it is amzing his brother, Billy, the corrupt midget, is still collecting a pension, knowing what his brother did, and did nothing about it and then standing up and saying, I don't recall. Though legally correct, we all know what it means!
Thanks, Kevin, for the whole scenario re Whitey. I had to read it, but it made me vomit. Whitey is a little man who drank from the sewer in order to become a big shot. He never made it any more than Jack the Ripper did. Enough. Why would he be noticed by the history that daily reports wholesale slaughter of million. He is the flea on the flee on the elephant's back.

Kevin: Bravo! Great article and spot on. The only addition I would make is the question: Is Bulger's protection by the feds a euphemism or metaphor for immunity? When they made the choice of protecting Bulger over protecting an FBI agent they chose Bulger! Was he that important? History now tells us along with John Morris, Connolly's supervisory handler, that Bulger lied about his information about the LCN or Mafia. This information was lied to USDC judges in getting affidavits and attributed to Bulger's success in bringing down the Anguillos and other mafia types. Baloney! But, Bulger will use the accolades to trump his defense of immunity. No one doubts Bulger's protection even when accused of murder and my recollection is the fight I had to bring charges against him for murder and justify my actions in trying to close him as a (protected) informant. Who made the choice to protect Bulger over protecting an FBI Agent? Bob Fitz
There was an initial doubt Whitey would take the stand until it was shown on the site covering Whitey's trial - www.thetrialofwhiteybulger.com - that there is not doubt that he will. The only way he won't is if the FBI can pressure the US Attorney to give Whitey a deal. There's not doubt the FBI will do anything to keep Whitey off the stand up to and including, well let's not go there. What's Whitey looking for? He knows he's never gettting out so he'll go for his moment of glory or else he'll take the final years at some type Fed Med, an easy Federal prison. He doesn't want to go to ADX in Florence, Colorado where he belongs.
''ADX in Florence, Colorado where he belongs."
Some of our prisons are inhumane and unconstitutional. Keeping someone in solitary for extended periods of time is unconstitutional. Let him go to prison for life but not in solitary like Gotti did. We are supposed to uphold the principles of the Founding Fathers.
The FBI is as corrupt as they come. Also the dept. of justice knew and approved.
