BEVERLY — Senator Scott Brown, seeking to fan a controversy that erupted this week, demanded Friday that his Democratic rival, Elizabeth Warren, reimburse taxpayers for the $276,000 that the state spent to mail thousands of voter registration forms to welfare recipients.
Warren’s campaign quickly rejected the demand, calling it “a ridiculous political stunt.”

For the numbers to work on this, Warren would have had to start plotting her run in 1993. Similarly, her daughter would have had to start plotting to get involved in Demos at the time. Plus, they would have had to coerce the Patrick administration to do something that hurt their party. ALL years in advance. Fiendishly clever!!!
Despicable behavior by Senator Brown here. Does he think lower income people shouldn't vote? Wasn't his mother on Welfare?
Apparently buying elections is only ethical when it involves the One Percent and their two mainstream political parties spending money to disqualify voters. Spending money to qualify them — how abhorrent!
Senator Brown should just take off his clothes again. That would get out the vote. What a twit.
Senator Brown has hit the nail on the mouth. It is vitally important that people in power, vested with the public trust — like incumbent Senators and the heads of inconspicuous 501(c)(3)s — never ever betray that trust by using the powers of their office for personal political advantage. Senator Brown would never do such a thing, and he is right to demand that Candidate Warren go after her daughter and the judge that found in her favor for restitution of taxpayer money ill-spent on encouraging low income households to get uppity and vote. And speaking personally, I am still waiting for George Bush to refund to me all my taxes he spent hunting for WMD in Iraq. R Philip Dowds Cambrige, MA
How about we do something to help we poor slobs who get and go to work every day ... change voting from Tuesday to Saturday. We'll hear the Democrats scream against this, working people getting out to vote doesn't interest them.
Imagine Democrats having finally the guts to go after voters who just may vote for them. BIG KUDOS to Elizabeth Warren's daughter. We fight fire with fire. Republicans know NO other way as they try all over the country to legislate Voting Right Act illegalities. Brown you know what you should do? JUST SHUT UP because you too will put your foot right in your mouth. I suspect your campaing is not a bastion of electoral ethics. It can't be. You are beholden to your Republican party of banksters to fund your campaign so PAHHHLEESE. Climb down your heavenly perch. YOU ARE NO SAINT!
Oh Please Scott your whining is getting as old as you dragging out washed up so called Democrats.. Ray Flynn really the defender of the catholic church cover up..
Do have any evidence at all for this? or do you just hate Democrats so much it blinds you to reason?
So you are admitting this is to get Dem voters? With taxpayer money? You are good with that?
Scott Brown has gone from wrong to weird. This order gives citizens help to register to vote via the Voting Rights Act. Making all this ugly noise Sen Brown in effect is baiting people's prejudices about the poor. He has no idea how they will vote and further he doesn't seem to care. It would be more rational to be working to secure their support, not obstruct them from voting. His actions portray him as someone who relishes perpetuating the myths about those down on their luck. In fact less than 20% of welfare recipients in this state stay on the rolls over five years. Instead of taking advantage of this by courting possible future fully employed people Scott Brown treats them as outcasts from whatever tribe he belongs to. Not only is it insensitive, it is ridiculous. Some of that nastiness that characterized his teen age years seems to have gotten the better of him these days.
Is Senator Brown saying that all those welfare recipients will vote for Elizabeth Warren right out of the box. What does that mean.... that those welfare recipients shouldn't be made aware of their choice and if they are they will vote for Warren because why, because they will see her as a champion for them vs being ignorant of the election and letting him skate into office and keep his right wing buddies. And as for voting on Saturday... WOW, you can vote from 8am to 8pm. You can't spend a couple of hours dedidated to making your voice heard. Oh wait, right you can't take time off from work because the MAN wants you at the grindstone and not making your voice heard. But of course if it were on Saturday, you'd also be bellyaching that it's cutting into college football, soccer or some barbeque.
So the "Peoples' Senator" thinks that ensuring that people can vote is liberal plot against him? What an anti-democratic narcissist.
Has anyone else noticed how personal all of Brown's attacks on Warren have been? First against her grandmother and now against her daughter? I understand politics is a tough business, but this just feels dirty.
So you're posting on the Boston Globe comments section at 12:20pm on a Friday. Shouldn't you be getting back to that job you seem to hate so much?

Wow! This is our "moderate" senator? Someone is giving him dicy advice. Keep it up Senator Teaparty!
So now we see Brown's true colors. Not that he has hidden his true leanings very well. His claims to be moderate and an independent are, for the most part nonsense. He has voted along right wing, tea party inspired lines more than 75% of the time. Only voting against the party agenda when the agenda being voted on doesn't have much of an impact on the daily life of the majority of citizen's in MA. His hysterical response to this issue which was initiated by Warren's daughter in DC NOT just against MA. But against 5 other states as well. It is a Federal regulation that MA had not met yet. So, it got done and now the Brown camp (ever vigilant to keep "undesirable" voters off the voting roles so as to pad the vote in their own right wing favor) is making hay out of it. Political fodder..whatever you want to call it. It stinks. And it exposes him as the "emperor with no clothes" to one and all.
Oh wait...he already exposed himself long ago.......
Look libs, if you can look taxpayers straight in the eye and with a straight face say that this wasn't done solely to help her mother in the election and NOTHING else, then congratulate yourself because you are a card carrying screaming democrat liberal from Mass. USA.
"This is just a ridiculous political stunt." Right you are Mindy, but the ridiculous stunt is yours. Daughter is working for Mom (Granny to us) and is using our money to do it. But wait, if Mindy's doing this in five other states, maybe she doesn't even know that her mother is running for the Senate.
Scott, could you have possibly found something less important to the people of the Commonwealth and to the US Senate to whine about? Why has every single one of your phantoms you've thrown up been a personal attack on your opponent, rather than discussion of your frankly miserable record representing the people of Massachusetts.
Brown is right. The state should be reinbursed for this. We are the only state that sent these things out.
