Warren and Brown trade charges on their tax stands

RANDOLPH — Senator Scott Brown delivered a confrontational speech Tuesday that accused Elizabeth Warren of seeking to impose “the largest tax hike since World War II,” prompting Warren to argue that Brown is defending tax breaks for oil companies and the wealthy.

Brown’s remarks, delivered to the South Shore Chamber of Commerce, were billed as a major policy speech but did not include any new policy pronouncements.

Comments

Clinton reduced the deficit while increasing economic momentum. And yes, he did that while raising taxes. Magical thinking will not make the deficit go away.

Scott Brown is living a fantasy. Kings and Queens, absurd speculations about Elizabeth Warren's employment, silly ranting about voter registration, now this. In every case a real lawyer, a competent legislator could have done a little bit of reading and avoided embarrassing himself. What is Scott Brown? What has he done? Of what use is he to the people of the Commonwealth? I honestly don't know and none of his supporters who post here has ever explained that crucial point nor has Scott Brown. Elizabeth Warren is a nationally recognized expert on commercial and banking law. She has created a consumer financial protection bureau that has already put the wrongs of one bank, capital one, right and returned their ill gotten gains to the customers. Her positions are not invented in some marketing focus group but ones she has had for over twenty years. She wrote a dozen books on exactly the kind of effects we could have expected from unregulated banks, that we now have seen, and how to put things right. She is not a politician for its own sake but for the purpose of public service. She will take a pay cut when she is elected and Scott Brown got a raise.

*********So- in 2011 Prof. Warren wanted to raise Social Security taxes. SHE BACKED OFF THAT. On Tuesday she said "modest adjustments would preserve the SS system in the future". SHE WAS UNABLE TO DETAIL WHAT THOSE WOULD BE, but she wants to raise your taxes, regardless. SHE REFUSES TO PAY THE VOLUNTARY HIGHER TAX RATE but is happy raising your taxes. ****I would like the GLOBE to pull apart one of Prof. Warren's speeches and ask Senator Brown to respond to her comments, similar to the way this article was done. Warren's responses were interesting and I would be interested to hear Brown's responses to Warren's comments.

Is Lizzy the Harvard bankruptcy professor, multimillionaire, and former Okey debater suggesting that she does not want to get a tax break for herself and similarly well off hubby? Maybe she will donate to her tribe, if she can select whichever one she belongs to.

Personalized, abusive, ad hominem attack. Contributes nothing in the way of ideas and cheapens what little is left of the political discourse we used to believe in.

Brown and Paul Ryan have many similarities e.g both are cute and charming, can get along with people on different sides of the political aisle but both strongly favor tax breaks for the rich and corps and "making the tough decisions" for the poor and middle class. Nov 8 will definitely be a down-the-ticket-vote.
