Beverly man dies in Vt. triathlon

The man who died Saturday after participating in a USA triathlon in Vermont has been identified as a Massachusetts resident.

During the swimming portion of the race in Burlington, Vt., rescue crews pulled Richard Angelo, 53, of Beverly, from the water because of a “medical issue,” Burlington police said in a statement.

He was taken to the Fletcher Allen Health Care Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

USA Triathlon chief executive Rob Urbach said in a statement that he was “deeply saddened” by the death.

“The sport of triathlon lost a member of our beloved community today, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to the athlete’s family and friends,” he said.
