Neighbors criticize bird-feeding resident in Hull

Accused of posing hazard, public nuisance

HULL — The future of an 18-inch bird feeder has sparked a squall in this South Shore village.

The dispute, pitting Hull enforcement agencies against a 70-year-old, bird-loving oceanside resident, unfolded in Brockton Housing Court Tuesday, as neighbors testified that the woman’s hanging bird feeder has wreaked havoc on the oceanfront neighborhood.

We had the cat nazis... in Wellesley, was it? Now we have the bird nazis in Hull. The rat part is a bit over the top and likely a rather extreme exaggeration. Nobody seems to be rational in these situations. Compromise and accommodation should be the order of the day, but both sides are ridiculously polarized over a... bird feeder? Really?

Sounds like she needs to take it down for a month or so, and then she needs to have a limit on how much seed she can provide. Refilling 5 times a day is clearly creating a nuisance.

I was under the impression that no one should be feeding birds in the warm months -- they are natural bug predators. It's only in the winter when food is scarce that feeders should be used.

Sounded crazy until I saw the video. She is attracting up to 100 birds at a time, many of them invasive species that don't deserve the help! If she wants to continue, she should get a smaller bird feeder, in red, and fill it with niger or thistle seed, instead of what she is using. This will attract other, colorful birds, in much smaller quantities, about a half dozen instead of hundreds, and will not feed the invasives. It will also lessen the amount of food lost to other pests like rats. If she can't make this further change, the board of health should shut her down for good.

Please.....Give me a break.

Where's Alfred HITCHCOCK when you need him?

Seriously, I cannot believe this made the globe... I hope David Letterman or some national news outlet gets a hold of this story so they can laugh about it...

Oh yes, let's feed the LOVELY birds. These are not cute little birds. My brother-in-law, was sitting on the beach with his wife who had just brought them both lunch. As he un-wrapped his sandwich and put it to his mouth a huge gull came down and snatched the sandwich and caused him to have to have stitches on his nose and face at the emergency room. Being an MD, he had to listen to a lot of ribbing about this and the whole family hesitates to eat anything near a beach now. THESE BIRD AREN'T NICE. They're PREDATORY AND SCAREY.

Sylvester: Thufferin Thuckotash! Dothens of tweety birds. Yum, Yum! ...................................Tweety: Ooh, you nathty puddy tat. Weave thothe tweety bewds awone!

Invasive species? They don't deserve help? If they're not causing any real harm then that's in the eyes of an evil beholder. Why don't you go out with your baseball bat and wallop every bird you see that you think is an "invasive species." While you're at it, maybe you can do the same thing to human beings that you've decided are "invasive species."

These aren't gulls. The feeder is one designed for small birds. Besides, if you live by the sea, gulls come with the territory. When I've been forced to live in the interior of the country, one of the things I missed was seeing gulls. If you don't like them, don't live near the sea.

Not true -- finches are seed eaters year-round, for example. I agree with haralambi - a thistle feeder and she will attract "nice" birds. I enjoy feeding birds, but I would not want a huge flock of noisy house sparrows, which crowd out the native birds. BTW, the "cat nazi" was in Concord.

I stand corrected. I knew the cat nazis were in one of them there western suburbs, but I couldn't remember which one. haha. Thanks.
