Reviled by neighbors and city officials, the McCarthy Overpass may not be long for the world. Though state officials are investing for now in short-term repairs, they are contemplating its removal, one of four 1950s-era mini-highways in and around Boston that could be dismantled and replaced with tree-lined streets and traffic lights to be more welcoming for walkers, bicyclists, transit riders, and the disabled.
