Hampshire College establishes a scholarship fund for students in the US illegally

Hampshire College, a private liberal arts college in Amherst, has created a financial aid endowment specifically for students who are in the country illegally, an unusually targeted response to the divisive issue of whether undocumented immigrants should receive college assistance.

The school, known for its progressive bent and alternative approach, began soliciting donations for the fund from alumni, parents, and students earlier this year and has so far raised more than $300,000. This fall, the fund will provide $25,000 to one student, and the college hopes it will become a consistent source of support for undocumented students, who are ineligible for federal grants and loans. Without assistance, many students here illegally find the price of attending college prohibitive.

WHY WHY WHY should ILLEGALS be favored over out of state U S CITIZENS for tuition discount? IT is discriminatory and I believe ILLEGAL. When will we see a LAW SUIT?

Bleeding hearts unite! Can't wait to see the posts trying to defend this one. I guess I'm crossing Hampshire off of our college tours this fall.

Thanks for raising the college fund the right way via donations.

Uh huh... and what qualifications will this puddlejump "college" demand from the temporarily legal aliens it deems worthy of admission for a freeb session of classes? Will there be a two-year limit to the program? Seems to be a memory that Barry the O dared not go too far and thus ordered that the kids of illegal aliens only get a break on the track to legal status for two years.

I can't say it's money well-spent, and I'll leave it to the INS to decide on legality, but at least it's private funds, and you know what they say about a fool and his money...

Yes, boatwrote, we get it that you can't stand to see undocumented young people whose parents brought them here illegally get a break in the only country that they really know and grew up in. We won't try to persuade you, either. Rather spend my time writing a check to Hampshire College to help those kids...

The "right" way? Oh, please. I live in NYC and thankfully our TAX DOLLARS help provide for in-state tuition for undocumented students to get the same break that students who have legal status get. I am so glad we are progressive enough to do that. MY TAX DOLLARS HELP THESE KIDS. Hooray!

They probably wouldn't want someone with your small minded mentality anyway, Rileysdad.

Oh, and by the way, you don't need to call us "bleeding hearts", an insult, unless you wanted to be labeled something you'd rather not hear...

Yes, I do...the fool is selfish and mean spirited...and can't see beyond his own circumstances.

Oh, do please get off your high horse. (1) There are plenty of people in need of such assistance, including from places like, say, Malone, or Harrisville, or Gouvernor, in northern New York, in case you care to venture our of your progressive mecca. (2) All the donations in the world are of no effect if the activity is illegal, so yes, it is up to the INS to weigh in on that.

Law abiding families need not apply.

If illegal aliens are eligible for in-state tuition or scholarships, why should out of state students who are citizens be charged a higher fee?

Martha clearly doesn't have a kid getting ready for college...college is VERY expensive and to have a full scholarship to a private college merely for your parents having been involved in illegal activity is crazy. I am pulling my hair out over how I am going to pay for a public college, but for illegals the sky is the limit...and it can all be FREE. Seems like they should have endowed two full scholarships, one for a kid who just worked hard in school...

No, nothing is being taken away from you. Private donors are giving money that they might otherwise keep for themselves or use for other purposes. I might not think it is the best use of that money, and Martha1 certainly seems to want to rip me a new one for having that opinion, but the fact remains, private individuals are free to spend their money in any way they see fit.

Folks, this is a Hampshire college. If you aren't from Western Mass, you may not realize, this is not a serious loss for kids trying to get a useful education. You quite literally can create a major like "Frisbee technique, with a minor in "you didn't build that" " . If you imagine the college in Doonesbury, you've got a good handle on it. What is bothersome, is the philosophy of favoring those who break the rules/make very bad decisions, over those who follow the rules, fall a little short on money/opportunities and no one, most notably the left, give a dang about them.
