Mass. highway signs perplex, and vex, some motorists

The cryptic sign had been up only a few hours when reader Laurie Shapiro spotted it on Route 128 during her commute from Arlington to Wellesley. “Stop forest pests,” it said, flashing on a programmable message board. “Don’t move firewood.”

Could it be a hack? Was a line missing? What did it mean?

Regarding the highway signs it often bothers me that they are posting useless messages. Do you think the OUI drivers really see the sign telling them they will get arrested? The firewood message is useful and it seems it got the message out but I am wondering why there is not much information posted about planned closures during the evening. Seems that state police and Mass Highway all of a sudden show up and just start closing lanes. I have seen some nasty backups on route 128 recently. How about posting some useful information regarding planned lane closures. Even the traffic reports don't give the information until you are in a 5 mile backup. And the Mass Highway website, as elaborate as it appears, is useless. Not very helpful!

Good morning Eric, As usual I enjoy reading your column whenever I can. I have a question about something not related to this article. I live in Braintree and within walking distance of the Quincy Adams RedLine stop. However, because the entrance on Independence Ave is closed (25years or so) I cannot get to it. There is absolutely no way of walking to it. So, the only alternative is to drive to Quincy Adams or Quincy Ctr or Braintree T at the other end of town and pay to park every time I use the Red Line. A couple of years ago I sent an email to the T about this and was told that the neighbors wanted the entrance closed because of parking issues. I think that with technology what it is today that this can be handled in a different way and would like very much to see this entrance reopened, not just for myself but for everyone in the area that I'm sure would also like to have access. Can you offer any help here. Thanks, Curt Lindberg Braintree, Ma
