Voter registration numbers released Tuesday show the majority of Massachusetts voters continuing to abandon the two major political parties, underscoring the continued importance of independent voters in statewide races.
While Democrats still hold a 3-to-1 advantage over Republicans among registered voters in a historically left-leaning state, more than 52 percent of the 4.2 million voters who are registered for the state’s Sept. 6 primary elections chose not to align with either major party.

Mr. Brown and Ms. Warren are locked in a fierce race that could be critical to party control of the Senate. Please keep in mind that, although Scott Brown claims he is bipartisan, he votes with his party most of the time --especially when the vote is close-- and that means support of the Republican platform and the 1%. Even if Republicans are successful in painting Mr. Brown as an independent politician capable of representing the whole Bay State if reelected, he will cast the deciding vote to give to control of the Senate to a largely very conservative group of Republican senators. GOP Platform calls for a ban on all abortions, reshaping Medicare and deep cuts to Medicaid and reinstating money that was cut from the military budget if Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan are elected in November. In contrast, Elizabeth Warren would instantly become a national leader, supporting the middle class and making a compelling case that successful capitalism requires government support to guarantee fair competition and economic justice.
Your information is outdated. Please do yourself a favor and stop with the1%, Ban on all abortions(UNTRUE),
I used to be an Independent, then was told I had to be "Unenrolled". Now I am changed to "Unaffiliated"? What is next, "Unaligned"?
This election will be a shocker for anyone who believes that Democrats will have their way. Ma. voters are becoming more and more independent in their voting. The democratic party, especially in this state, has continued to let the voters down. Promises and lies are all Democrats get. If the voters in Ma. vote democrat they will certainly get what they deserve. NOTHING and more NOTHING- only lies and dirty politics.
Those numers and the chart do not agree with the headline. Can anyone add at the Globe?
