Sex, drinking detailed in report on BU hockey

When Boston University released its report Wednesday on hockey players’ “culture of sexual entitlement,” it kept most of the investigation details — including accounts of sexual debauchery and wide-ranging allegations of academic trouble — confined to confidential subcommittee reports.

In the documents, which were obtained by the Globe on Thursday, were tales of a late-night 2009 NCAA championship party at Agganis Arena where dozens of guests drank from kegs in the locker room showers and took to the ice naked to shoot pucks.

this stuff starts at the high school level. Z

Flash, This Just In! - Many high caliber athletes (and many not so high caliber) are complete jerks, and even worse. Outrageous behavior by pampered jocks begins in middle school and goes downhill from there, but it is tolerated, as long as they win. Athletes are not the only ones to blame, however, they have been failed by parents, coaches, and fans, all of whom conspire to create a culture that places winning above character, a culture that enables bad behavior, and alas, has been with us since Achilles dragged Hector's body outside the gates of Troy.

It is time for Parker to step down. Shame on BU for allowing this type of stuff to happen in the first place. Shame on Parker for knowing about it and allowing his players to continue to get away with it.

BU might not be able to manage the bar, but the police can.

BU is not unique.  In D1, major sports programs, the myth of the student athelete is just that; a myth.  One needs to look at D3 programs for experiences that represent the ideals the NCAA and major sports schools try to project.  It is typically (and usual)  for D1 hockey players to have 2-3 years of junior hockey before colleage.  As a 20-21 year old freshman, they are already out of the main stream student body.  It is common for schools to create seperate lodging, dining and recreation facilities for the top sports programs on campus.  I believe BC may have done this as well with a recently built facility on the lower campus. The granting of an entitled status is the foundation for problems.

dog bites man.  collegiate males drink and have sex.

and I suppose most males at the Globe, and many females, did not party hard at times in college??  round out this reporting.  report on the rank hypocrisy, please.

Willfully stupid with a sense of entitlement...great combination.

So what's worse - beer and chicken, or beer and sex?

Boston University (where I learned absolutely nothing in a semester in 1966) should decide whether it wants to be the great university that John Silber pushed for, or whether it wants to continue to soil its own shorts by pampering privileged jocks with a sense of entitlement while it operates a farm team for professional hockey. Boot the students, shut down the program completely for a year, retire its overpaid, negligent "coach" to retire, and focus on academics. I know, it'll never happen. The school was an unprincipled, mediocre educational factory, a wasteland of the mind, back in '66, and doesn't seem to have changed much. You'd think a major university athletic program would at least give lip service to teaching character through sports.

Jack Parker is a legend in these parts, thanks at least partly to the local sports media, who exalt him.  But, not unlike the Paterno situation, these stories and this whole debacle will besmirch Parker's reputation.  He's not exactly a young man, so he can continue for awhile.  But the whole program has been diminished irrevocably.  And once again, we hear about the very dark side of collegiate sports.

dog bites man, part 2:  head coach bullet proof.

so, at BU sports teams can have group sex, as well as sex on playing fields, rinks, etc, and a head coach has no responsibility to tell anyone??  let's guess what HIS involvement was ... but let's not disturb massive fund raising.  great school.  and the change since Silber??  what, this is new ??

Sounds like Jack should retire! Appears to be another Paterno issue here.
