Authorities say an unknown amount of untreated sewage flowed into Vermont’s Missisquoi River after a rain storm. Vermont’s Wastewater Management Division also reported that 54,000 gallons of treated and partly disinfected effluent overflowed into the river during the storm on Wednesday. Rodney Allen, chief operator of the Enosburg Falls facility, said the overflow was greater than the system’s 30,000 gallon tank could handle. He said more than 6 inches of rain fell in 12 hours. Allen told the Burlington Free Press such an overflow is unusual, and might occur once every two to six months, depending on the weather. Environmentalists say upgrades in infrastructure are needed to prevent such discharge. (AP)
