James Fairbanks and Alain Beret, married business partners from Sutton, had been searching for the perfect property to open an inn for nearly two years when they discovered Oakhurst, an aging mansion on 26 beautiful acres in Northbridge. The Diocese of Worcester unexpectedly ended negotiations with them in June. Then, they say, a church attorney inadvertently forwarded them an e-mail in which Monsignor Thomas Sullivan advised a church broker not to sell to the men “because of a potentiality of gay marriages” there.
