Brown, Warren hit hard on taxes and allegiances

In first debate, senator assails rival’s character, gets blasts at his record

Senator Scott Brown and Elizabeth Warren, in their highly anticipated first debate, wasted no time attacking each other heatedly as they tangled over her heritage, his tax record, and which candidate would help the struggling middle class.

Brown went after Warren from the opening seconds, saying she has not “passed a test” of character, truthfulness, and honor necessary to be a senator because she “checked the box” as a Native American when “clearly she’s not.”

An amusing hour of politcal theater.  Brown even managed to get a reference to his truck in.  Gee, such a 'regular guy', but where was his barn coat?  How many times did he mention his 'house full of women', and how protecting his mother from an abusive step-dad demonstrates his support for women? Perhaps if my mom, wife, and daughter were being chased by his angry step-dad, rather than politicians aiming to turn the clock back 50 years, I'd feel compelled to vote for him.  Fortunately, they are not, and I am not.

He mentioned the house full of women because...he has a house full of women, Idiot!  And Lizzie the Liar sounded like a parrot with no answers of her own.  Who needs another Massachusetts Democrat representing this state in Washington, especially one who cannot think for herself but will only vote 100% with Obama, right or wrong.  Brown actually goes out and listens to the people..not just when he's trying to get elected, but whenever he has the opportunity.

And wasn't it just like Harry Reid to try and keep Brown from arriving for this debate.  Talk about dirty tricks!  Brown arrived from the airport at the debate site only 20 minutes before it began.  Harry Reid was justifiably afraid he'd wipe the floor with Warren, and he did!

Brown wiped the floor with grandma Lizzie the Liar.  She sounded like Little Johnnie One-Note.  No answers, only repeating the same mantra given to her by her Washington handlers.  I saw one poll this morning on WBZ-TV which concluded Brown won - 50%, Warren 40%, Neither - 6%.  I guess the other 4% didn't watch.

I think she did better than expected ... she kept her voice even and avoided 'preaching'. Still, I don't think she would behave that way if elected to the Senate, she would surely add to the divisive nature of Congress, where Senator Brown is one of the few who can work with both parties.

I'll bet you thought that stuff before you even watched the debate. Am I right?

Warren's stock answer that "What kid would question her parents about her heritage" makes no sense. When she 'checked the box' she was an adult lawyer who knows the difference between documented truth and family lore.

In the debate last night Sen Brown showed he is a Mitch McConnell Republican.  He tells us he can tell someone's heritage by looking at them.  Score one for the bigots.  He tells us he started fighting for women's rights when he was six.  Score one for fighting domestic violence with your fists not with law enforcement.  He tells us a pipeline will create jobs and lower prices at the pump.  Score one for right wing delusion on number of jobs created(it ain't much) and ignorance about oil pricing that depends on global markets not intracountry pipe lines.  He tells us he supports women's status in this country by putting bosses in charge of health choices, voting against equal pay for women laws, and voting against a Supreme Court Justice who will protect women's hard earned rights and then dismisses his nay vote by making an un-called for snide remark.  Score one for the cads and legislators who want to limit women's power in business and in their private lives.  Scott Brown tells us that Elizabeth Warren wants to raise taxes every chance she gets but then he votes for oil subsidies(the equivalent of raising taxes for the rest of us), and he votes against keeping the tax rate low for lower income families.  Score one for the unpatriotic individuals who don't understand what interfered with government's ability to relieve suffering in this recession due in large part to the CEOs that make up Scott Brown's support.  Unpaid for 2 wars, unpaid for Medicare Part D, unwarranted tax cuts, and a recession caused by the river boat gambling financial industry. Scott Brown's veneer as a "nice guy" was missing in action last night.  He was crude, inaccurate, insulting and definitely not Senatorial.  He demonstrated his Tea Party bona fides last night.  Now I'm not saying he is Mitt Romney but if you vote like one of his supporters he sure is not an independent.

"He tells us he can tell someone's heritage by looking at them"  .... did you forget that Warren said her "grandfather had high cheek bones like all the Indians did" ?    Neither of these candidates is racist, just guilty of stupid off-the-cuff remarks.

Now there's a smart man!

All I can remember from the "debate" is Liz repeating the epithet "Billionaires and millionaires" 37 times.  My Gawd!  But then, Senator Brown spewed out that "she makes $750K/yr teaching one classl.  Well, so what?  who cares.  Maybe they can only find one subject she does well with.  I am exhausted with my hatred for those horrible rich people who pay less than a secretary (oops, admin assistant} in taxes.  Remember those old commercials that asked, "Where's the beef"?  That old cow came rumbling down the alley last night when Liz said we don't need that nasty, old oil in the pipeline she cancelled.  There "folks" is the real beef.  In case you missed it between Liz saying her election was a vote for the Bam Bam, she proclaimed you would be employed by all the new windmill factories that will sprout up in Massachusetts.  Then she said,  "I am a real Indian, because my father told me so".  Did I miss anything?  And this took an hour!

Yes you missed the point of everything she said. To bad!

Scott Brown is the biggest fake, lightweight--always has been. He had nothing of substance to say so he tried to talk fast, tap dance, and character assassinate on a ridiculous issue. How about so many of his family members who have come forward to say HIS book of full of outright LIES? Elizabeth could have brought that up in a very damning way. Maybe she should have.

For those you who think he is such an Everyman, get real. He owns more houses than John McCain (six), that barn jacket that (incredulously) helps gets him votes retails for $675 (are YOU wearing a coat that cost that much?), his pickup truck is used to transport his show horses, and his multiple $10,000+ triathlon racing bikes. I have seen the bikes at many a race, and I know what they
cost.

His image is wearing thin. He is being revealed as the flimflam man, opportunist he's always been. Remember, he signed the BLUNT AMMENDMENT. Add to that he SIGNED THE GROVER NORQUIST PLEDGE. He pledged his allegiance to a man and a group outside the government, and in order to stay in the good graces of the Republican power brokers, can never, ever vote to raise taxes on the gazillionaires. Never. He is beholden not to his constituents of the citizens of the United States, but to Grover Norquist and the Koch Brothers.

Get real, people. Wake up. This man has no affinity with you, and cares little about you.

Some of the comments here are so pathetic. Scott Brown lied.

Replies

Which lies did he tell? This comment has as much factual basis as the whackos accusing Warren of lying.

YES!

We would never elect Inhofe, McConnel, or even Romney again but we'll give the senate to them by electing Brown?  He votes with McConnel on partisan matters and they let him vote with the Democrats every once in a while so he can pretend to be bipartisan.  I still think he'll win, but it will be terrible to have those national Republicans in charge of both houses of Congress.  We'll regret it.

If that happens, I am moving to South Korea!

and Harry Reid has not passed a budget in 3.5 years and the democrats control the senate...so that is competence. Remember the democrats had control of both houses for 4 years 2007 and the first two of Pres. Obama...so who's fault for the s#crew up..the democrats. And the deficit increased in 4 years $5 trillion on Pres. Obama's watch more then Pres. Bush's 8 years. Maybe if you like Pres. Obama's policies, try moving to Cuba, Russia, China, N. Korea because they distribute the wealth and only a few elites like Elizabeth Warren, Pres. Obama . I think we regret the 4 years the democrats had control of both houses.

I don't know what debate you were watching...but Scott Brown did fantastic last night! Scott Brown won that debate hands over!! She was like a broken record repeating platitudes." Jon Keller gave Warren a lot more time than Brown...but Brown still articulated the issues.

ha ha ha what debate were you watching

NO!

Scott Brown displayed ignorance, pettiness, and racism in attacking Elizabeth Warren for claiming Indian heritage. He basically said Warren doesn't look like (his idea of) an American Indian, suggesting that she was lying and trying to use a family story to get undeserved advantage.

1. The appearance of someone who has a very mixed ethnic heritage may not conform to a stereotypic opinion. Does everyone with an Italian last name look "Italian" or O'.....'s all look Irish etc etc etc?

2. Those who recruited Warren to Harvard Law School (no one 'applies' for a tenured position) didn't know anything of her possible Native American roots, several generations back.

3. Oklahoma is unique in having a large number of residents with Native American ancestors because of how it was formed as Indian Territory. Brown should read a little bit about it - Wikipedia has more information than Brown displayed.

4. It's simply outrageous to "demand" that Warren demand that Harvard release her employment records to satisfy Brown's "accusations" that don't amount to anything.

So on the question of character Brown showed pettiness right out of the box. And further along he wasn't completely honest about his votes and his views. That kind of dissembling should matter to voters.

YES!

they were talking about character and she was listed as a minority by colleges which give her an advantage over others that may be more qualified for the job. She's for the little guy, but makes $375 thousand to teach 1 course at Harvard where the little guy cannot afford to go because of high salaries like hers.... All I heard is she is voting for Pres. Obama...how is the Arab winter working out, especially when you have a president that runs off to a fund raiser while our consulates are burning an ambassador & others are murdered. That is not leadership.

Even in a story like this which is supposed to simply summrize the debate, Globe writers can't stop themselves from editorializing against Republicans at every turn.  Even the sub headline of the story does so.  My favorite was injecting the fact that Scot Brown's vote against Obamacare didn't come up.  Why are you reporting it if it didn't come up!?  You people and your paper are a joke, but the electorate is not stupid.  Scot Brown will work for the people of Massachusetts, like he has done so far, and reach across the aisle.  Lizzy will just be another far left democrat hack doing their bidding.  Does Massachusetts really need yet  another one of those?  Does the nation?

Replies

YES!

Loved Brown's response that he had "Been fighting to protect women since he was six years old" referring to his mother being abused. Also liked his reminder to Warren that she was running against him, when she went on about other Republican senators was brillant.
