Former mayor Ray Flynn adds voice to Senate race

The last time Raymond L. Flynn held elected office was 1993, his final year as mayor of Boston. But as US Senator Scott Brown and Democratic challenger Elizabeth Warren fight out one of the country’s most hotly contested races, Flynn, improbably, has entered the conversation.

It started over the summer, when Flynn, a registered Democrat, appeared in a campaign ad in which he endorsed Brown, a Republican, and continued this month when former governor Michael S. Dukakis lashed out at Flynn at the Democratic National Convention.

Comments

“I didn’t go through his congressional record or roll call. I don’t have time for that. People don’t have time for that. I am interested if the guy is honest, that he has personal integrity.” How disappointing that the former Mayor of Boston doesn't think a Senator's votes are worthy of consideration. Brown's behavior in the campaign speaks volumes about his lack of integrity.

Most people today don't know who Ray Flynn WAS, or care.

RAY - SIT DOWN AND SHUT UP!

Ray Flynn is  DINO.

Flynn cant get over his bromance for any male politician challenged by a strong woman.  He has a point about not being about 'party' ... he is all about men in control.  Bush, the Pope ... oh, and reproductive rights ... women should know their place which, for this has-been pol, is serving men.

Pathetic.

Very bad judgement call for Brown. Flynn is as stable the Long Island Bridge in Quincy.

You may have a point there. I doubt if I am the only Massachusetts voter who (1) believes Obama and the Democrats have mismanaged the economy (like G.W. Bush before them), but (2) detests the Religious Right. If I see the upcoming election as a referendum on birth control, I will vote for Warren.

Did I read this right?  Did Ray Flynn really admit that he never met Warren and knows nothing aout her? Isn't the point for anyone much less a pulic figure to get to know both candidates before making an endorsement.   I used to respect Flynn as a champion for the average working person.  If only he had done right by the citizens in getting to know both candidates equally before endorsing one or the other.  Sad and dissapointed in Ray Flynn.  He is revealing an ignorance that is stunning.  Has he no sense of the issues?  ...the economy?  ...equality?  The good 'ol boy networking is alive and well!

I had the same question as respect1world. How can the former mayor meaningfully endorse a candidate without knowing anything about his opponent?

So, Flynn admits he isn't even aware of the issues; he's just endorsing Brown because he's a "regular guy." Well, now I know why Flynn became irrelevant a long time ago; the man is clueless regarding the middle class and the struggles it is having with paying for education, health care, and finding decent employment for its young people graduating from college. Flynn's a guy that constantly needs attention. But when he emerges back on the scene every few years all he does is embarrass himself. Brown must be desperate if he's hanging with Flynn.

Interesting last line of the article there.   Hey Ray..  Maybe you should meet the lady and figure out whose street sweeper you want to hitch a ride on.

Other commenters have already underlined Flynn's self-admitted ignorance and his apparent inability to deal with a competent woman. The similarities with Al Smith are interesting too. Once was the time Mr. Smith was a champion of Catholics and all hard working people struggling for a way out of their difficult circumstances. But he lost an election and the luster of his heroism began to fade. Roosevelt assumed the progressive mantle and actually did what Smith had promised to do. So Smith, embittered that no one continues to kiss his shrinking ring decides that he is against Roosevelt, against the New Deal, against everything that would benefit those he once championed. It is a sad story...as is Flynns's. A man once admired for his principles becomes a faded, shrinking presence who can say without a trace of self-awareness, Elizabeth Warren? The Democratic candidate? I don't know a thing about her...but I'm against her. Ignorance has become his proud calling card.

Must be a South Boston thing.  All I see, living outside Boston, is an old punch-drunk politician whose time has come and gone, best remembered for his pub presence and constant cameo appearances on Boston TV before he became mayor.  Brown must see something different, or the same; pictures of dead people before they expire, STOCK bill that he thinks he wrote and memories of secret talks with Kings and Queens.  Usually Brown projects his failing reputation/image on exemplary people so that he can bask in the glow of their accomplishments, so different from his own, so this gambit sort of escapes me.

Well, let's see. You seem to be so shallow that you judge people by whether then can speak in a way that meets your approval. I suppose you'd make fun of Stephen Hawking too. Correct that -- I doubt you know who Hawking is.

And then you make a racist remark to put the icing on the cake.

You're a piece of work.

Criticise Flynn if you must, but this kind of cross party endorsement sure looks more like the seeds of bipartisanship.  There have been several other local Democrats endorsing Brown.  Interesting to watch the reactions.  "what is it?" "Bipartisanship! It looks like Democrats and Republicans agreeing in some areas".  "we have to kill it before it spreads.  First lable any of the apostats as turncoats, then we begin the character assasination.  Hopefully, we can stop this kind of getting along before it spreads into the Senate".

Bipartisanship is overrated and the way Brown panders to voters is especially galling.  Other people have posted, time and time again, that most of the non-GOP votes were throw-aways, probably with the blessing of GOP leadership.  We all know what a Brown defeat will mean: loss of a potential majority in the Senate and loss of a marquee senator to further the GOP national agenda.  Bipartisan=independent thinker and voter?  Look again, or listen again.  As he attacked Warren personally, Warren simply stayed on her course: don't listen to his song of the Siren:  Look at the way he votes.  Before Warren entered the race, Brown was a dependable down-the-line vote for leadership, from repealing the Affordable Health Care Act, which he boasted he would be the "41st vote," even though he never read the law (He was still a Mass. legislator,) to voting against almost all bills that would have provided relief to Americans in need. Now, he waffles, waits and weeps.  He is, in Ted K's famous words about Mitt, "multi-choice."  He flips. He flops and he fabricates.  He is unsenatorial and unworthy of a serious vote.  He is definitely NOT for us.

Flynn has never been aware of the issues even when he was in office.  It's obvious why he likes Brown, he's a white guy.  He's probably voting for Romney for the same reason.

Parade o' dinosaurs. Linking his campaign with these oldsters underscores that Scott Brown is another nostalgia candidate, preaching that we CAN turn back the clock to the good ole days, when life was so much simpler. Only it really wasn't like that in truth, to lots of people, especially women and minorities. Notice Brown doesn't have any commercials with currently elected Democrats saying, "Heck, yeah, vote for Scott." No, they can see through Barncoat Brown, unlike the cataract-crusted eyes of the Ray Flynns of the world. And of course, Flynn, dreaming of his "legacy", relishes this ego-driven chance at "one more hurrah", just like he dreams of a Southie that's been gone for decades. Sad, truly sad.

In 1989 when workers from New England Telephone were on a 4-month strike to preserve their medical coverage, Flynn had a staff member at city hall who was on the payroll of the telephone company. Naturally, Flynn supported NET. Forget the working-class South Boston stuff. Flynn had no integrity then and he has none now.

This is the same Ray Flynn who backed Cardinal Law through the abuse scandal If Flynn ever had any credibility it was lost then. His endorsement is worthless.

It took me almost ten minutes to read that article and alas, I'll never get that time back. Wasted into the dust of eternity.

Take away: Ray Flynn "from South Boston" endorses "good guy" Scott Brown without ever looking at Brown's voting record, "I don't have time for that," and doesn't "know the first thing about Elizabeth Warren. It's a Catholic thing apparently -the whole wasting your vote based on knowing nothing about nothing. Massachusetts voters are highly encouraged to do the same.

Endorsements are largely meaningless unless the endorser brings votes.  The three voters Raybo may influence were already voting for Brown.  Tommy Menino doesn't like to lose.  He will crush Brown in Boston.  Count on it!  Which endorsement would you prefer?

Replies

For someone who doesn't like losing, this mayor- Menino- has sure picked a lot of losers lately, including Tom Reilly and Hillary Clinton (against our current gov and president.) Of course, Coakley too. He's on a terrible losing streak in city and state house elections. His "machine" even lost Sal LaMattina's race for Probate against a total unknown last month. And yet the media in this town pretend none of that's happened.

Tom Menino does a good job getting Tom Menino elected. But his track record since 2006 in helping others win is just plain awful.

Warren- who will win Boston handily- is doing him the mayor BIG favor, just in time for his re-election year. Menino will take credit for her winning the city, when really, its President Obama and his coattails that will be the major factor.

RAY FLYNN ON ELIZABETH WARREN: "I don’t know the first thing about her."_______ Apparently, sir.

RAY FLYNN? Give us break. He is a non entity. Tomy Menino is the man who runs this city professionally. Ray Flynn ran it into the ground while he was out either jogging or drinking to excess @ JJ Foley's. This guy has NO idea about Liz Warren because he is a dope who has been in a stupor while Liz has been fighting for US in Washington against big money republicans and wall street, who stole our retirement money during George Bush's last 2 years in office. The so called Democrats for Brown are a bunch of folks who live in a fantasy world thinking Brown will help them. He was a do nothing state rep/sen who each time voted against the working class and union members.

So. Flynn is saying that he endorses Brown because has has "character" but can't name any issues and says he knows nothing about Elizabeth Warren.

What kind of character supports the Repub agenda and where is the regular guy in that?  It's as vague, cryptic and deceptive as Romney's campaign. Why would someone who says he's for the regular guy support the Ryan budget plan which would be devastating for regular people.?

Elizabeth Warren has my trust and support even more after seeing these convoluted statements by Flynn and the posing by Brown.Everytime he says "bipartisan" he loses more credubility. Those who have seen his voting record know otherwise and    yes, Democratic control of the Senate is crucial for those of us who care re our fellow Americans.

Thank God for Menino,Dukakis, Frank etc, those who really care and are appropriately alarmed by Repub campaigning.

Ray Flynn-- Cardinal Law's biggest defender during the pedophile crisis, now champions Scott Brown because he's a "regular guy" despite knowing nothing about Elizabeth Warren.  I think Ray Flynn simply knows nothing.

I always thought Ray Flynn seemed a little wonky.

Raybo is about as relevant as a manual typewriter this week: formerly useful but now a relic.

Flynn has been a Democrat in name only for years now;  Scott Brown is welcome to him and his endorsement, and Mike Dukakis is right about this: this is a different guy, a turncoat, no true colors here.

Ambassador to Ireland, my fooT! Endorsed Bush--does he think that makes him some sort of blueblood?

Raybo has suffered mightily and Brown is his chance for revenge.  Don't be fooled, Boston!

One has to love famus raymus for endorsing the boy senator. Why? Because as others have written below....flynn has been MIA for decades. The boy senator....desparate for any kind of vote is dusting off relics that no one remembers. And that is the crux of what we have here...a whining, crybaby, amateur trying to pretend he is one of the big boys. One has to wonder who l'il scotty will dredge up next? One guy I would love to have around would be Dapper O'Neill who would not be afraid to give flynn a figurative slap upside the head for this dalliance with a boy who has no business representing our state in Washington.

Getting Ray Flynn's endorsement doesn't take much, does it?  He didn't look into Scott Brown's record, and he _admits_ he doesn't know anything about Warren.  So what on earth is the guy endorsing?

I can only figure that it has something to do with abortion. I don't know Brown's record in detail, but he says repeatedly that he's pro-choice. Still, for some reason I don't understand, he has the support of just about every anti-abortion group you can name.

Flynn, a traito to the Democrat party! Take ur Brown BS and Cathloic crap to the Vatican! OHH u already,

did that! U won't review his Congtessional record, BUT he's a god guy?

Flynn go on a Pilgrimage, to Yemen!

Ray Flynn is a has been, the same as Scott Brown being an empty suit.

Watch the next 3 debates, and it will become obvious.

im·plic·it /imˈplisit/   Adjective:

  1. Implied though not plainly expressed: "implicit criticism".

This is exactly the criticism that has been used against Warren by both Brown and Flynn, since it would be too difficult to find details that would incite voters against her.

what???

Speaking to Boston's 96.9 FM radio program "Jim and Margery" on Monday, Democratic Senate challenger Elizabeth Warren admitted that she is not licensed to practice law in Massachusetts.

According to reports from listeners, she claimed that she does not maintain a law practice. She also "said that she gave up her New Jersey  license because she could not keep up with the Continuing Education requirements," according to one listener who commented on Breitbart's Monday story, "Does Elizabeth Warren Have a Law License Problem?".

Ms. Warren's statement comes as a surprise to the many clients she's provided legal services to over the past decade, including the law firm of Simpson, Thacher, and Bartlett, which listed her as "of counsel" in the 2009 brief they submitted to the United States Supreme Court on behalf of their client, Travelers Insurance.
