Drug lab chemist accused of lying

Testified that she had master’s from UMass, but school denies that

Former state chemist Annie Dookhan does not have a master’s degree in chemistry from the University of Massachusetts Boston as she claims on her resume, officials at the school confirmed Tuesday, raising fresh doubts about the credibility of the woman at the center of the burgeoning state drug laboratory scandal.

Dookhan, who resigned from the Jamaica Plain lab in March amid an investigation, received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the university in 2001, officials said. But school records show that Dookhan took no additional courses after completing her undergraduate degree in 2001. UMass Boston officials said Dookhan requested an application for the master’s program, but never completed it.

This is not as serious as Barack Obama's lying on his resume and lying to the entire country about what happened in Libya.

Now she's done it. She'll never work in criminal evidence again.

When will this woman be charged and arrested??

Who is checking the credintials on these people? Was she an affirmantive action hire. She needs some jail time so do her bosses. Sounds like when the Boston police lab could not read finger prints so innocent people were put in jail. They closed the lab but I don't think anyone was punished.

Annie Dookhan in charge of lab quality assurance -- that's rich -- having the one who manipulates the results in charge of others who might actually be honest. That's like helping criminals become honest hard working citizens by putting their probation and training in the hands of political hacks. Hey, come to think of it.

But, this kind of thing often happens in the work world, not just in government -- the one who works the hardest (or at least looks like they are, or is the most political) becomes the supervisor.

I don't know Annie Dookhan or any of the facts in this case.   However, I do have knowledge that District Attorney Conley is a person of integrity and won't go along to get along.

So, wait a minute. everyone.  Don't crucify Annie Dookhan just yet.  All of the facts are not in and, perhaps, you are watching a classic "scapegoat" frame-up as it is happening, while the other players "sneak out the back door."

Based on my firsthand experience, many state institutions are in chaos and crumbling from lack of leadership, very little supervision and placing some employees in jobs for which they are not qualified, allowing many government employees to rely on their own judgment, without proper guidelines and without any oversight.

Remember this, "A good scapegoat is nearly as welcome as a solution to the problem."  Where does Annie's chain of command stand in all of this?

"You can buy witnesses, but you can't buy facts."

Let's wait until all of the facts are in before you give Annie what is tantamount to the electric chair.

Paragraph 1 suggests she stated in her resume that she had a master's degree. Paragraph 5 suggests she stated she was working on her master's degree. Which is it Andrea?

@richstan

I think the problem lies in the very strange way in which Dookhan wrote her CV.  Instead of a putting a date after she listed a master's degree, she wrote, in parentheses "present."  One could interpret this as stating that she has an master's or that she's working on one.  Too bad no one appears to have checked into it.  (Her CV's on the Web site.)

Thank you very much. At least someone is on the ball :)

Two things. Whoever managed this lab would seem to have been asleep at the wheel. How could Dookhan get away this? And how isn't she locked up? You have a steady stream of convicted felons being released back into our communities because of her actions and she's still free. Doesn't seem right.

Something continues to be questionable about this case.  The Globe is listing just about every criminal case that has supposedly been contaminated by an involvement of this woman chemist who formerly worked at the state Public Health Department lab.  Now the Globe is seeking defense lawyers who want their clients freed from jail or prison because this woman chemist may have spoken about a case with no written record that she did so.  Yet, all this day-to-day data spill only hints of a motivation for this woman to allegedly behave as she is accused of doing, committing distortions of collected evidence that worked in prosecutorial advantage.  Was she trying to advance her career, trying to provide stronger punishment for defendants, trying to act for reasons as yet unknown, trying to act from motives spurred by mental defect?  The matter of a questionable advanced degree may give some hint, but it does not even address the issue of how this woman could continue working for several years committing the alleged violations of evidence testing, handling and testimony with no cop, prosecutor or state scientst/supervisor detecting such behavior. Is there a scapegoat being prepared here? Or was the state laboratory so ineptly managed and the legal authorities also so inept that one person, this woman, could get away with what she is alleged to have done until something brought about a detection? And what exactly was that event that led to her supposed detection?  Answer such questions, Globe, and provide a little less publicity for the probable drug peddlers that are being freed to the joy of their lawyers.

boatwrote and dougkinan, strong comments and I agree with most of you posts, except for: "You can buy witnesses, but you can't buy facts." You can, indeed, buy facts, because there are no facts out there in reality that are not evidenced by some person or test, and people can lie and tests can be faked. But I think probably what you meant was "facts to a reliable and objective observer".

Of course it's not politically correct to mention it, but was her hiring a result of affirmative action and the

desire for "diversity".

they also should check  Julie Nassiff credentials, she was  Ralph Timperi's  (previous  dph commissioner) babysitter.   Ralph Timperi's  fake his PhD degree.  I worked for  dph and I always question Julie Nassiff knowledge  and credentials for having such  higher position right away when Ralph Timperis gave her that Chemistry Director position...  she used to used  employees in the lab to babysit her daughters in her house and  they also should investigate other lab that she oversees...  I dont know why took so long to fired her... unbelivable!!!
