A man in his 20s suffered serious injuries after being shot multiple times Tuesday in the Grove Hall section of Boston, police said.
Boston police said the shooting occurred near the Grove Hall Mecca shopping plaza at about 3:45 p.m. and that the victim suffered life-threatening injuries.
Deputy Superintendent Randall Halstead, at the scene, said the man was taken to Boston Medical Center, where he underwent surgery. Police had no update on his condition Tuesday night.
Halstead said a suspect had been seen fleeing through the mall, and that officers were checking stores for any surveillance video.
He declined to release a preliminary description of the suspect and said it was not clear what touched off the shooting near the border of Dorchester and Roxbury. “It’s an active investigation at this time,” he said.
The victim was a man in his 20s who was shot multiple times across from the Grove Hall Mecca shopping plaza.
Police at the scene near the corner of Blue Hill and Geneva avenues were taking photographs of the area later in the afternoon. A flatbed truck took away a vehicle from the site.
Shenique Gaitor, 34, said she was inside a store in the plaza when she heard at least two shots.
Gaitor, who was with her 5-year-old son and 14-year-old daughter, said she later saw the man lying on the sidewalk and moving his hand slightly.
“We weren’t too scared, just more concerned” for the man, Gaitor said.
Her husband, Rohan Thomas, 36, said he later rushed to meet his family when he heard what happened and saw police putting a young woman in a cruiser.
“I hope they catch” the shooter, Thomas said.
Boston police had initially reported that a woman was shot in the area of 1 Gaston St. in Roxbury, in a separate incident about 20 minutes earlier. However, later in the evening, Officer Nicole Grant, a spokeswoman, said police mistook the woman’s injuries and that she had been involved in a car accident, not in an incident where shots were fired in that area.
The woman, another adult, and a small child were in a motor vehicle that struck a wall after the shots were fired, Grant said. All three were taken to Boston Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, she said.
