The former mayor of Central Falls has appeared in court for the first time on a federal corruption charge of accepting gifts from a friend and political supporter. Charles Moreau has agreed to plead guilty to the charge, although a not-guilty plea was entered on his behalf during his arraignment Thursday before a federal magistrate judge at US District Court in Providence. Moreau is expected to plead guilty at a later date. His lawyer, William Murphy, said he is expected back in court within two weeks. Moreau was released on personal recognizance and had no comment. Asked if his client would apologize, Murphy said, ‘‘He’s accepted responsibility.’’ Moreau resigned last week shortly before he was charged and agreed to plead guilty to accepting gifts from Michael Bouthillette.
